because I've been there
lost in the darkness of my pain
         drowning in unshed tears
and always alone, so alone

   I had given up on life
on trying to get out of the whirlpool
          I had no purpose
just pain and voices in my head
  living in my own personal hell
                         I've been there

       I gave up
stopped trying to fight
let the darkness carry me away
        but into that darkness
    a light suddenly shone
          when all hope was lost
a hand reached out to me
     and didn't let go even when the fingers started bleeding

     when I stood upon the shore
thinking it was a dream
     that I'd wake up and the voices would be back
    I was pulled into an embrace
           He looked into my eyes
  and I can still hear His voice
              I LOVE YOU
          I CARE ABOUT YOU
      I'VE BEEN THERE
LET ME BE HERE FOR YOU

   He saw right past my mask
He looked only into my eyes
        and saw my torn soul
     all those unsaid words
the scars that ache every night
         my need for Someone
   to love me unconditionally
         for who I am
not what I have or haven't done

      He gently took off my mask
took off the dark cloak and hood
   He held my heart in His hands
and said, "You're so beautiful"
          He took my hand
    and said, "I won't leave you
to face life alone"
      He gave me a candle
that no wind can extinguish
          a light in my heart
     to keep away the dark
to declare, "I am free"
  and He walked right beside me
            told me I was worth it
   I didn't let go of His hand
and I pray that I never will
     because He truly cares
        truly understands
           truly loves
              truly helps
  He is always there for me
               unchanging
                   neverending
     
   I look into your eyes
        and I see the pain
              fear
                 confusion
                      loneliness

      and my heart cries for you
my tears run at night for you
            because I've been there
