As part of the plan, Nadin had followed the soldiers to Alivina's house from a distance. He stayed outside when they went in, and when they came out with Alivina, Nadin went in. He looked around at the place, and guessed at once that they didn't find her easily. Furniture lay strewn about the room, and every wall was bare. One painting lay against the wall next to a tunnel. He swam down, finding a sparsely furnished room. This must be where the Trident is, he thought. He searched the room, looking above, below, and behind everything. As he lifted up a seaweed rug to look under it, he spotted a trapdoor. Aha! He pulled it open and swam down into it. The tight space was barely large enough for him to squeeze through, but once he got out into a slightly larger room, he stopped and looked around in the dimness. Leaning against the wall was an oddly shaped bundle. Nadin swam to it untied the coarse cloth from whatever was beneath. He smiled triumphantly. It was unmistakably the Trident. He rewrapped it in the cloth and with it started the long swim back to the palace. The king would be very glad to have this back.
