Percy POV
We have no choice but to fight our way out.
I am too exhausted to attempt a shadow travel in the midst of Tartarus.
But we have eight demigods at our side so we might stand a chance.
I swing Moira and slash through as many hellhounds as I could. Leo is throwing fireball after fireball. Pax impales monster after monster with her twin swords. Piper and Annabeth are working together with their knives and daggers. Hazel defends them with her spatha from long range attacks. Jason and Frank fly above attacking from above ground.
It was all going well, until my sword goes straight through a hellhound.
It doesn't disintegrate.
The others are having the same problem with some beasts.
Pax swipes her hand through a hellhound.
Some of them are illusions!
"Everyone! Fall back!" Jason shouted.
Everyone except me and Pax began retreating.
"Something's up," she whispers.
I nod. "Some hellhounds are fake. Could they..."
Pax's eyes widen. "Di immortales, they're distractions! Something else is coming! We have to run!"
"We need to move forward!" I shout at the other demigods.
"They're too many." Annabeth chides me. "It'll be suicide!"
"I know Tartarus. I've been here for a thousand years. If we stay, then something bigger will come." I retort.
Annabeth sighs. "But..."
"But what?" Pax interjects. "What have you done for this quest? You did the one thing we were not supposed to do! You're the reason we are surrounded! So swallow your pride, Miss I-have-everything-princess, and follow the expert!"
Annabeth glares at her. Piper has to hold her back from strangling her.
"Listen," I begin, "some hellhounds are illusions."
I thrust my sword through a hellhound and nothing happened.
"They're here to keep us concentrate. We have to move out!"
"In small groups." Pax adds. "It'll be easier to burst through the hellhounds."
Everyone agrees. Jason takes Piper and flies over the hellhounds. Frank turns into a horse and Hazel and Leo ride on him, throwing fireballs and swinging swords at any hound that comes near.
Annabeth drags me onto the field and we barge through the hellhounds.
We all arrive in a cavern. For some reason the hellhounds don't follow us.
"Just like old times." Annabeth smirks.
I frowned. Something felt off.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the questers on their little reunion trip." A sinister voice growls.
I instinctively put my sword up. The others do the same.
"Reveal yourself!" Piper charmspeaks.
"My, my, my. Another charmspeaker? Haven't seen one ever since the Second Titan War. We don't want to ruin the surprise," it snarls.
"What do you want!" Frank yells, looking around.
It laughs. "The real question is what do you want? Or rather, whom have you lost?"
It is at that moment we realize Pax isn't here with us.
