The Silence of Joy

Lara spent the next couple of weeks working with Len and Hollis trying to reach the outside world. Just when it seemed to Lara that they really might be the only possible survivors, the static voice of a stranger broke the radio silence they had grown used to hearing. She had remained in the makeshift radio room long after the others had given up and moved on to something else.

The days had melded into one seamless abyss and the only highlights were playing with the kids, who had taken their new found freedom to heart. Even the dogs took on new life and there was running and laughter and happy licks for everyone.

No spoke of the briefcase or it's contents and Lara was relieved in that aspect. Keith hadn't discovered much else in any of the hastily written notes or carefully typed out records, if anything he said the handwritten notes had become so non-sensical they looked like fever dreams.

But the voice she was struggling to hear, at the moment, came with a rush of foreboding intrusion they hadn't counted on. The statement was simple, scattered, fading in and out as it was, on the unreliable airwaves of chance, chilling Lara to the bone.

"Don't come for us. . ."

Lara shouted into the mic, frantically trying to make contact. "Hello! I'm here! Who are you! Where are you! Hello! Can you hear me!" she shouted again and again, pounding on the receiver disk. "Dammit! Hello! Please repeat! Confirm! Something!" She clicked the receiver disk several more times and gave up, throwing the mic on the desk and staring at the radio with despair.

Suddenly the airwave gauge spiked, and she grabbed the mic again and slammed the receiver disk. "Hello!" She screamed.

"D.C., ... inferno. . . hear you. . . . .....- - -........ to Las Vegas . . . New Mexico. - - -.. ...left ..."

The signal faded and Lara yelled pounding the receiver disk. "Wait!"

Her hand dropped down to her lap and she quietly placed the mic on the table. She got up and went to find Nathan and Len, to tell them what she'd heard. She found them outside and sitting by a small fire talking.

Len sat cross legged on the ground as he usually did but today his long hair was braided, and his choice of clothing left no doubt that he was geared up to go hunting. When Lara approached, he stood up. Buck, Hollis, Nathan and Deag turned and Nathan asked if anything was wrong.

"Is it that obvious?" Lara joined them with a sigh. "No, I'm just disappointed. I started getting signal breakthrough. I could hear a female talking. The connection was crappy, but a few words came through and they weren't good, but the one that stood out was inferno."

"Inferno?" Hollis echoed. "Could you understand anything else?"

Lara nodded. "It was the first thing that came through that was disturbing. She said, don't come for us, and I heard D.C. and Las Vegas New Mexico."
