So, you see this isn't really a story about our father. It's really about our mother. It's about her journey from meeting the love of her life, to having his children and losing one, and everything that came after. She learned how to be her own person. She learned how to love herself and let old love go despite how much it meant to her.
My mother is my hero. She taught me how to be a mother. She taught me what love was and how constantly changing and growing it was. My mother loved my father. And she loved us kids too. Our home was never short of love. Mom loved dad. Dad loved mom. Our parents loved us. We loved them. Mostly.
She chose what was best for her, and we don't get to be angry at that. I can only hope that I am half the mother that mine was to me.

This is for my mother.
My strong, fearless mother, who taught me how to be a mother, how to love.

To mom,
My love always, your daughter.
