The tunnel winds deep into the Rocklands, but Taz and Fletch haven't gone much farther when a different smell hits them. It's outside air, and it's coming from up ahead. They reach the end of their tunnel to find that it opens up back onto the Rock Flats. Any underground shortcut to Raventower, then, is down those darker holes.

Prior Updates:

1. Oblivious to the drama rocking Rockhall back in the cliffs (see Volume I, Vote Star Villainy chapter), Taz and Fletch have found a tunnel complex that might be linked to Raventower. Past the squeeze of an entrance, two patches on the ceiling glow faintly, illuminating damp walls and what might be a spider's web. Beyond this, however, is blackness.

The glowing patches are, of course, vote stars.

2. The first ten tail-lengths of the tunnel light up in the faint glow of the new patches. The tunnel does not branch, but it curves just at the edge of visibility. Something up ahead smells... old. Not rancid or rotten, but rather like it's been forgotten for a very long time.

3. The bend in the tunnel is washed with a faint light as the two round it. It is almost as if the algae on the walls is responding to their movement. Fletch swings out his tail and Taz trips to a halt, kicking a pebble down the tunnel. It tumbles half a tail-length and vanishes without a sound.

4. The pair inch forwards to find a hole in the ground. By the waft of cold air out of it, it leads down to another tunnel system, but it's completely black, not just darkened. They exchange a glance and hop the hole, continuing on its other side.

5. The pair have gone only a few tail-lengths when they find another hole. It's just like the first, pitch black and smelling more ancient than the Rock Flats. The twins exchange a glance. Neither of them is inclined to explore down there when there's still tunnel ahead, so they hop this hole, too, and continue on.
