A RAGING FORM OF FAMILIARITY GREW IN REIN'S BONES. She couldn't entirely tell if it was the heartbreak talking, the updated picture of Sammy Pike burned in her brain, or the little amount of sleep she got since returning to the island, but she was beyond both mentally and physically exhausted.

It didn't take much for Rein to fall asleep that night. The minute her head hit the pillow she was out like a light and dreaming of the last day of sophomore year. It was easily the best last day she ever had.

It was the first last day the Pogues had where one of them could legally drive. They all shared different last hours so a bet was placed on who would make it to the Twinkie first when the school bell rang. Of course, Rein was the last one and she had to practically chase the van up and down the parking lot before John B stopped. Whenever she would get close, JJ would cheer and John B would step on the gas.

When Rein finally did get in the van — after John B almost hit one of their fellow classmates while paying attention to the brunette girl instead of his surroundings — they had taken off out of the school and drove around for hours.

It was a moment of serenity before their summer turned upside down in the hunt for the Royal Merchant gold. Rein and Pope had no vengeance against each other, both girls were completely fine with being in the same room without arguing, JJ hadn't made any rash decisions that drove a wedge between Rein and himself, and John B's only focus was to have the summer of their dreams, not trying to escape from a jail cell.
