NEVER TRUST A HOLY CROSS.

A saying Rein had heard a handful of times in her childhood thanks to her father. Of course, he wasn't referring to a cross plated in gold and diamonds, but rather the one people worshiped in a church. Ashton had always made it clear to his two children that anything that ever happened to them wasn't a holy lord's doing, but their own consequences coming to light. Karma was Ashton Partens god, and he made sure his children worshiped the same one.

Karma. A word defined as the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. Although Rein did believe in the fate of karma, she never quite understood how it worked. How cutting Maisey Delaney's ponytail off in the fourth grade could lead to herself breaking her nose later that day by slipping on the completely dry playground. Or returning twenty bucks that had slipped out of a touron's pocket would later result to a crisp fifty dollar bill appearing in the back of an old pair of her jean shorts.

As for believing in the man who created the earth and hand perfected every single thing on it, Rein wasn't sure what to believe. But she wasn't sure how she could have such bad karma at such a young age that would result in the years of trauma that haunted her sixteen years of living. Nonetheless, how could a god give out the same fate?
