11 | Is he Renee's boyfriend? Husband?

CH 11: Who makes you happy?

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

‘Isabelle’

As Grey watched Renee and the young man with the umbrella hurry into the apartment complex, he couldn't help but wonder who the guy was. He'd never seen him before, but there was something unsettling about him.

Is he Renee's boyfriend? Husband? Grey wondered, a wave of jealousy washing over him. Or perhaps he's just a concerned friend?

Grey shook his head, trying to push the thought away. It was none of his business, he told himself. But he couldn't help but feel a little curious.

After all, he'd been the one to drive her home.

As Grey turned the car around, his thoughts continued to swirl. She had kids, he reminded himself. Maybe the man was her husband, or her boyfriend.

But even as he told himself that, a seed of doubt took root. He couldn't help but remember the way Renee had looked tonight, in that stunning red dress. The way her hair had glowed in the candlelight, the way her smile had lit up the room.

He couldn't deny it—he'd been drawn to her, and he didn't like the idea of someone else stealing her away.

As the car sped through the rain-soaked streets, Grey tried to ignore the feelings of jealousy that churned in his stomach. He'd never been one to let his emotions get the better of him, not since 'HER'.

It was easier to push people away than to let them in, he told himself. Especially someone like Renee, with her intelligence and beauty.

But even as he reasoned with himself, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special about her. That maybe, just maybe, she could be different.

Maybe, she was worth the risk.

Grey pulled up to the front of his family mansion, his mind still reeling from his encounter with Renee. But as he saw his daughter, Isabelle, waiting for him under a large umbrella, his mood shifted.

"Hey, Papa," she said, sliding into the car with a smile. "How was the party?"

"The usual," he replied with a wry grin. "Mother's extravagance and Father's endless speeches."

Isabelle laughed. "You always know how to make it sound so appealing."

Isabelle shook her head, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Well, at least you made an appearance. Grandmother would've been devastated if you didn't show up."

Grey shrugged. "I try not to disappoint." He glanced at his daughter, noting the way her brown hair fell in soft waves, just like her mother's had. "Did you have a good time?"

Isabelle nodded. "It was fun. Grandmother's parties are always lively." She paused, a teasing gleam in her eye. "Though I heard you were quite taken with Grandmother's new guest."

Isabelle's smile widened, her teasing not lost on her father. "Oh, she's just a friend," Grey replied, his tone light, but his heart a little heavier than it had been moments ago. "Lavender invited her because she's working with me at Grey’s house."

Isabelle raised an eyebrow. "A friend, huh? She must be special, considering you don't have many."

Grey shot his daughter a look. "And here I thought you were supposed to be on my side."

Isabelle laughed, the sound light and carefree.

The banter between father and daughter continued as the car made its way through the winding roads back to Isabelle's apartment. Grey couldn't help but feel grateful for the distraction, his thoughts still drifting back to Renee and the man with the umbrella.

"You know, I haven't seen you this excited about a woman ever in my 12 years of living," Isabelle observed, glancing over at her father. "I'm beginning to think you might have a crush on this Renee."

Grey rolled his eyes, but couldn't quite hide the small smile that tugged at his lips. "Don't be ridiculous.

Grey turned the car into the driveway of his mansion, the rain having slowed to a light drizzle. As he pulled up to the curb, he turned to his daughter, his expression serious.

"What if I told you I wanted to date Renee? How would you feel about that?"

Isabelle's face lit up, her smile radiating with joy. "Dad, I would be thrilled! You deserve to be happy, and if she makes you happy, then that's all I want for you."

Grey smiled, touched by his daughter's genuine enthusiasm.

"I'm glad you approve," Grey said, his gaze softening. "I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be awkward for you, since she's working with me."

Isabelle waved off his concerns. "Dad, that's the least of my worries. I know you'll handle it professionally." She paused, then added with a mischievous glint in her eye, "But I do want all the juicy details of your dates."

Grey chuckled, shaking his head. "I should've known better than to share with you."

As Grey turned to face his daughter, he brought up the man with the umbrella, saying, "Isabelle, I saw Renee with a young man tonight. They seemed close, and I'm worried he might be her husband."

Isabelle listened carefully, then responded with a smile, "Dad, you're jumping to conclusions again. Remember, you thought I was in trouble when you saw me with my friend Marcus? That was just a misunderstanding."

"You're right," Grey conceded.

Grey laughed, realizing his daughter was right. "You're probably right. I'm just being paranoid. He could be a friend or her son or something."

"Now, about this young man," Isabelle continued, her tone thoughtful. "What if he's not her husband, but her son? Like you have me, maybe she has him. He could be a connection between you two."
Grey smiled, considering the possibility. "That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that." He paused, thinking for a moment before asking, "Do you think I should ask her about it?"

Isabelle considered the question carefully. "Well, Dad, if you're truly interested in Renee, I think it's worth finding out who that young man was. But maybe not right away. Let things progress naturally first. You don't want to seem too nosy or desperate."

Grey nodded, appreciating his daughter's wisdom. "You're right. I should focus on getting to know her better first. The truth will come out eventually."

As they got out of the car going into the house, the rain had stopped altogether, the stars peeking out from behind the clouds.
