After I left Dad's room, I went to help set up what I could. "Hey, Kiddo, I got all your favorite snacks and drinks. Are you cool with hamburgers and fries?"

"Yeah, as long as you fix it my usual way." I beamed. "Grilled onions and chopped-up yellow peppers.

"got it." He smiled back. However, Gaby was not impressed with my order, as she made a disgusting face. "I'm good with plain cheese, uncle."

"Of course, princess. Hey, you can't open those cookies yet." Dad took the box of Chips Ahoy away, making her frown. "Why not? Y/N won't mind, right, Y/N?"

"She might not, but your dad will if you eat cookies before dinner. He already knows about our pop tart night." He arched his eyebrow.

She hesitantly nodded. "Fine."

"So, what do I do then?" She tilted her head. He hands her tablecloths, making her frown once again. "This sucks." She mumbles as she walks outside.

I turn to Dad. "What about me? What do I do?" I say, clueless. He hands me a tray. "I'll cut, and you put them in the tray."

"Okay."

"Okay, I got the grill on." Miguel rub sweat off his forehead as if he worked for hours. "Good, put the patties on." Dad handed him a tray.

Miguel scowls and goes outside, mumbling. "This sucks."

Dad and I both laugh. "I take it he doesn't like to cook?" I tell Dad. "No, he does, but not grilling. Princess thinks he'll burn off his precious eyebrows." He chuckles.

I hum, and I stare as he laughs. "So, um, you and Gaby are pretty close, huh?" I say bittersweet. "Yeah, um, is that a problem?" He got nervous for some reason.

"No, not all. It's nice to hear that you do the same things we did together with her." I smile.

I was being honest.

"Yeah, she reminds me a lot of you. Believe it or not. I guess I just missed having you around. You left very young, and I never got closure. And with Gaby here, it felt like I still had my baby girl left." His eyes got watery, and so did mine.

I gulped a lump of pure guilt. I was so selfish that I didn't see that my departure affected him so much. "Dad, I'm sorry." It was a mere whisper.

"No, don't apologize. I understood why you left. I just missed you, Y/N."

I don't think about it, and I wrap my arms around him. "So, did I. I'm here now. Summer might not be enough to compensate for it, but it could be a start?" I offer a clean slate with a slight smile.
