The sun had set not much later, the Pogues staying hidden as the police went to and from the airstrip. By the time they left it was dark and the streets were quiet. They headed to the closest house, which happened to be Kiara's. The girl snuck inside and grabbed the keys to her father's car and then the Pogues were on the move again.

When John B stopped, everyone was surprised by his choice of location.
"John B, what are we going at a police station?" JJ asked as the car was put in park.

"Somebody's gotta tell them what happened," he explained.

Pope began coughing from the middle seat, lifting the joint to his lips to take another puff. He practically hand't stopped since that first breath of the Juul.

"Slow down a bit, Pope," Callie instructed the boy from the back where she sat beside JJ.

JJ leaned forward over the back of the seats in front of them to put a hand on John B's shoulder. "All right. I'm just gonna be real with you right now. You might end up in the lion's den, but you don't go there on purpose. It's fundamental. Just like my old man always told me, you should never ever trust cops, no matter what the circumstance is."

"Your old man's an abusive liar," Kie pointed out flatly.

"I agree with JJ," Pope said once his coughing died down. "Fuck the police."

"You goin' to the dark side now?"

Pope moved so that he could see Kiara, who was sitting in the driver's seat, properly. "When's the last time the police helped us?"

"Peterkin looked out for me, all right?" John B snapped, not letting their argument continue. "Tried to, at least. They need to know."

None of them fought him on it this time, allowing him to get out and enter the police station. Callie sat nervously, not sure what side she sat on. She didn't trust all of the police but she did like the Sherriff and agreed that she deserved justice.

Since they were in the very back and none of their friends could see below their necks, JJ reached over to hold Callie's hand. He intertwined their fingers, squeezing her hand gently as he let his leg fall to the side so that their knees were touching. She held his hand tightly, her free hand pressing against the ring through her shirt.

They all sat in silence, waiting nervously for their friend's return. As time slipped by, Callie had to keep herself from going in there after him. She had to tell herself that John B knew what he was doing - even if she wasn't completely sure.

"Kie! Start the car!" they all heard John B scream.

Kie jumped. looking out the window and asking what was going on.
