Cleo and Emma were busy trying to find a place to hold the school dance since Emma was in charge of committee school events. It made me glad that I never got on the student council. I could never see myself trying to book a place and then finding out at the last minute it got canned. Though I offered to gather plenty of fruit from the backyard for the drink mixtures.

While the girls arranged for a place to hold the dance, I got to harvesting with Grandma who was happy to help out.

"Have you decided who you're going to the dance with?" Grandma asked as she picked several lemons and tossed them into the basket, "I'm sure there's a lot of boys who will wanna ask you out."

"I'm not sure," I shrugged as I plucked a couple of mangoes.

"What about that nice surfer boy, Byron?"

"No, he's more into Emma. And I assume Lewis will ask Cleo to the dance. Plus, Rikki will be with Zane. But hey, I don't have to have a date just to have a good time. I'd rather use that time to hang with my friends, even if they got other halves."

"That's a great outlook, Zoey. But you never know when someone will turn up."

I smiled at Grandma and resumed picking a few more mangoes before moving on to the peach tree.

Emma called to let me know that she and the student council had managed to book a place to hold the dance. It was no surprise it going to be held at the cafe. Plus, it seemed Emma was able to get Wilfred's permission and told me to bring in as much fruit as I could.

Grandma and I ended up filling up about four crates of fruit knowing that the drinks would run out like hot cakes. Dad and Grandpa helped me deliver them to the cafe with the work van.

"About ready to party, Zo?" Grandpa smiled at me as Dad and I hauled the crates into the cafe, "It'll be a ripper I reckon."

"Almost," I nodded, "It's the last one before summer break."

"Have any boys asked you out yet?" Dad wondered.

"Nope. Not yet. I'm not getting my hopes too high. Grandma says it could happen though."

"Just lemme know if it does."

I met up with the girls. Emma was happy with the amount of fruit brought in. For being an organizer of events, she was determined that the dance went on perfectly. Rikki and Cleo asked me if any of the guys asked me to the dance. I gave them my answer. As I guessed correctly, Rikki was going with Zane. Emma was too absorbed in organizing the dance to get a date. Cleo was hoping Lewis would ask her out though according to the girls, he was trying to perfect a formula that would make us waterproof to avoid accidentally getting splashed and sprouting tails.

At school, while I was getting my textbooks for my upcoming classes, I was surprised when Patrick Wilde, one of Byron's buddies came up to me. I had seen him around the school grounds, at the beach where he worked as a lifeguard, and at the cafe.

"Hey, Zoey," Patrick smiled at me.

"Hey, uh, Patrick," I nodded, "What's up?"

"I know we haven't spoken much, but I was wondering if you would like to go with me to the dance tonight?"

It made me think of the conversation with Grandma. She was right about a lot of things.

"Sure," I agreed.
