DUSTY WAS LEXA'S SAFE HAVEN. Quite frankly, she couldn't remember the last time she'd spent more than two nights in her own home; especially not since they'd been officially boyfriend and girlfriend.
After years of on and off hooking up and being paired together by their classmates, Dusty and Lexa just made sense. Hottest couple in Hartley High, the only one to really care about.
And that's all that mattered to teenage Lexa, just the fact that she was known. Quite frankly, Lexa liked that every social move she made was watched, that she was the High School entertainment. She loved walking into school after a big weekend and hearing all the nasty rumors that came from it, revelling in whether they were truthful or not.
There was one fear of a rumor that never escaped her, the one that she and Spider had hooked up or were hooking up. And that's because it was true.
Yes, Dustin Reid was Lexa Madden's safe haven but Spencer White was the first crush, the puppy love; he was the one who'd taken her virginity.
Not that anyone knew it.
To everyone, and especially to Dusty, Lexa and Spider were childhood friends; the most romantic thing to occur being a quick kiss in spin the bottle.
So, when Dusty finally asked Spider whether he thought Lexa would go out with him, Spider said no. And that made Dusty want her even more.
Grade 9 was a long one.
Spider had been talking for months about asking a girl to their school dance, his best mates trying to crack the code on who it was. Yet, when Dusty asked Lexa to the dance, he just couldn't figure out why Spider didn't want to go anymore.
And when Lexa didn't speak to Spider the next day, or the day after that, he knew he'd missed his chance.
Lexa was Dusty's, and it stayed that way.
And so, a month before they'd all started Year 11, in a drunken night after a fight with Dusty, Lexa found herself laughing in park sharing a bottle with Spider. He was so close to her, far more close than he'd been in a long time.
Spider thought he might've changed Lexa's mind about him, but all he'd really done was set himself up for failure.
Sure, they'd started to hook up behind Dusty's back but Lexa had no intention of breaking up with Dusty.
