The universe had always been against me.

Whether it be my mom passing when I was two months old because she decided I was more important than receiving cancer treatment. I would say jokes on her but really the joke is on me considering I have been blamed for her death ever since.

Then being diagnosed with type-1 diabetes when I was only two years old.

Don't get it confused, I wasn't diagnosed because my wonderful father was concerned, not in the slightest. I was diagnosed after my father locked me outside in the snow for twenty-four hours as a punishment and I passed out. My brother got home from a sleep and found me, he then called an ambulance, they assumed I lost consciousness due to the freezing temperatures.

They were wrong.

Type-1 diabetes used to be known as Juvenile diabetes because unlike type-2 diabetes which is mostly health and lifestyle oriented while type- 1 diabetes is typically first found in adolescence and symptoms commonly start becoming noticeable between the ages of four and seven.

With type-2 diabetes the pancreas — an organ of the digestive system — makes less insulin that used to and your body becomes resistant to the insulin.

However, with type-1 diabetes the pancreas does not make insulin because the body's immune system attacks the islet cells in the pancreas that are supposed to produce the insulin.

Enough about type-2 since it is incredibly relevant to my story.

Type-1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that originates when cells that are meant to make insulin are destroyed by the immune system.

Insulin is a peptide hormone — a compound of two or more amino acids linked in a chain — produced by beta cells — cells that make insulin — of the pancreatic islets — groups of cells in your pancreas — encoded in humans by the INS gene — which provides instructions for producing insulin.

It is a hormone that is required for the cells to use blood sugar for energy and it helps regulate glucose levels in the bloodstream.

Insulin is considered to be the main anabolic hormone of the body It is meant to regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and protein by promoting the absorption of glucose from the blood into liver, fat, and skeletal muscle cells. In these tissues the absorbed glucose is converted into either glycogen via glycogenesis or fats via lipogenesis.
