"Lady Bug?!" I call out as I enter the unlocked front door.

"In here!" Lisa calls out from what I assume is the kitchen or dining room, in ten years, I have never stepped foot in this house. I've barely even been on the street in front of it. I've never been close enough to look in any of the windows. The smell of alcohol and cigarettes burn my nose as I walk through the house.

"Lisa sweetie, let's switch places okay?" I try to remain as calm as possible, watching the small girl holding onto a blood soaked small towel, she's covered in her own brother's blood. She shouldn't have had to deal with this.

I watched her closely and the second she backed away I jumped into action.

"I'm not going to ask questions right now-" I say as I begin to pack the wound, it's larger than I thought for being a stab wound, "I need you to quickly wash all the blood off your hands, arms and face, change your clothes, and grab your school bag. I'm not sure when I'll be able to bring you back here. Don't worry about anything else, I'll have Megan bring you to the store with my card so you can get more clothes and shower stuff. Just be really fast, okay?"

"Okay." She says quickly as she runs to the bathroom.

I feel my hands shake as I attempt to control the bleeding. His cardioverter-defibrillator could actually be quite helpful in this situation if things turn for the worse, which may be the only reason I am more focussed on the bleeding than anything else.

If it comes down to it, the defibrillator is able to regulate his heartbeat, but it can't do much if he's losing more blood than his heart is able to pump.

Right now I just need to prepare him so he can safely be moved to the hospital, where it's far more sterile, and I have the proper equipment to give him a real check over.

I'm quickly realizing a lot of what I thought I knew about Maxwell Augustus may not have been very true, however, if there is one thing I do know.. Max is far from a quitter.

If he was, he would have quit a long time ago.

"I should be in the operating room with him, not standing around like a fucking sitting duck." I spit in anger.

"The way you're acting right now is why I ordered Alessandro and Matteo to hold you back while the doctors took him from you. It's the same reason we don't allow doctors to work on their own loved ones. You know more than anyone how many tough calls you have to make when in surgery, your emotions will cloud your judgment and he won't be able to get the best possible care he can possibly get... So what you are going to do is sit back like the rest of us and trust that my staff... your staff... know how to do their jobs..." He trails off, "and maybe you should go check on her." My dad adds as he points to Max's little sister, sitting on the hospital floor with her knees pressed tightly against her chest.
