I slowed so she would take the lead. She did, proving the download had worked.

And she accused me of being a robot. I shook my head, willing my face blank. With Lexicon in there, her mind was more mechanical than she would ever admit.

My mirth slowly soured as we approached the portal, her words before the briefing settling back into my mind, ringing in my ears, amplified by the thoughts and emotions touching her face had elicited. There was no getting them out. My guilt guaranteed that.

It wasn't going to work. There was no way I could keep this kind of information from her. She was right. In doing so, I was pushing her away, betraying her trust. I had made a promise to her and now...a betrayal was exactly what this was. If I waited a few more days, there would not be enough time to fix anything, to convince her everything would be okay.

If I could only get her to promise not to run...
