niola hands the phone back to matt with a small smile, feeling an ounce of pride for being able to convince chris to unlock the door for them.
"what'd he say?" matt asks, noticing niola's smile.
"he agreed to unlock the door," she says proudly. and for a second, while standing in the pouring rain with matt, niola forgot all of her problems.
she loves and also hates the fact that matt does that to her. it doesn't matter how bad hee day has been, matt always manages to make her feel better. most times, she even ends up laughing and smiling after just a few minutes in his company.
they didn't wait long before chris came up to the door and unlocked it from the inside. he held it open for matt and niola as they walked past him into the house.
inside, nick and camille were standing in a nearby room pretending like they're not eavesdropping on what's going on. but when they don't hear any talking, camille decided to abandon their plan.
she walks over to chris, niola, and matt before giving them a pitying look.
"the door was locked?" she asks, feigning concern and confusion. "i can't believe it!"
niola looks at her skeptically, not taking long before niola realizes that camille was the one to lock the door. her entire face reddens, knowing that camille did it because she knows about niola's crush on matt.
niola could tell all of this because A: camille is a horrible actress and an even worse liar and B: she's niola's best friend.
"you two fix your issues yet?" nick asks, walking into the room with his arms crossed. because frankly, if they're still arguing, he's not sure what he's going to do. maybe he'll just throw them both off the roof of a thirty story building, simply due to how sick he is of how long they're taking to admit their feelings to each other.
just out of spite, niola opens her mouth to say 'no' and lie to everyone so they don't get the satisfaction of knowing their plan worked.
but matt spoke before she got that chance to.
"you locked us outside?" matt asked. "what if my phone didn't work from the rain and we were stuck out there? what would you guys do then? leave us to die?"
"you're being dramatic." chris complains, rolling his eyes at his brother.
"yeah," nick agrees, "we were watching you."
"that's not creepy at all." niola mutters, making matt laugh a little.
they both assumed that nobody noticed their little moment, but nick thinned his eyes at them instantly. he doesn't say anything, but he's secretly decides that he won't be throwing them off any buildings.
chris looks around at everyone and feels really confused.
camille definitely knows something about niola because they're doing that thing where they have full-on conversations with their eyes. then chris looks to the right of camille where nick is standing, who is looking at niola and matt as if he's also sharing a secret with them.
then there's matt and niola themselves who aren't sharing the full story on what happened. but for some reason, chris feels like he's the only one who doesn't understand.
"soooo," chris says, "is that a yes? as in, you two did fix your issues?"
matt looks at niola and knows that she probably doesn't want everyone to know that she confessed yet. honestly, the whole thing still confuses matt a little bit.
niola almost kissed matt, their lips less than an inch apart, then she backed out and asked him if he wanted to kiss her. obviously, he said yes. then, she got upset and said that was a problem. when she turned to face him again, she was on the verge of breaking down. with tears in her eyes, she admitted that she loves him but she can't. she said that he deserves someone better than what she could offer. so matt explained that he only wanted her. nobody else.
the thing that confused matt wasn't that she was acting super out of character, but the fact that she thought she didn't deserve him.
in matt's eyes, niola was the epitome of beauty and elegance. if perfection were turned into a person, that person would be niola silvers.
first of all, how could someone like that ever love someone like him? matt didn't view himself as a peice of shit, but he definitely felt like he wasn't worthy of someone like niola. he always thought he would end up with someone like amelia – annoying, loud, invasive, disloyal, and genuinely a bitch – but he would have to deal with her anyway.
then, on top of her admitting that her standards were low enough to be in love with matt, she said that she didn't deserve him?
"how about you save the annoying questions for later?" matt suggests. "niola and i are still wearing soaked clothes. so we're going to go change."
matt grabs niola's hand before he pulls her down the hall to his room, leaving his brothers and camille alone. camille was about to offer niola some of her clothes that she keeps at the triplets' house. but she decided to let matt dress her instead.
