Emily's POV

I stood as still as possible. Of course this would happen. Just as I felt like we had a chance of making it out of here, something has to crush my dreams.

I looked into the wolfs eyes seeing a hungry pair blue crystals looking back at me.

A loud stomp came from behind me. I couldn't look. The stomping continued.

"I love you, Em. Tell mom and dad I love them too." Katie took off running.

The wolf turned it's attention to her. Darting after her and forgetting about me.

"KATIE!" I used all of my voice to scream after her.

No no no no no. It took me a minute to realize that I was also running. When did I start?

I shook my head mid run and focused on catching up with Katie. There was no way she could out run a wolf. Maybe I could turn the dogs attention to me.

"STOP!" I tried to get it to come back. I was losing stamina quick. Too quick.

Finally I caught up seeing Katie stopped and against a tree. The wolf snarled at her getting into an attack position.

"NO!" I reached my hand out. Katie's face plastered with fear.

"KATIE!" I called out.

I tried not to take my attention away from Katie. I was afraid to look, afraid to see her being attacked. She looked scared to death. I needed to get the attention of the wolf. What could I do? I looked at our surroundings. My head spun, my eyes faster than what my head could do.

A shadow appeared to the right of me. I did a double take. It wasn't a shadow. It was a person. It was Cole. My shaking eyes looked into his. His eyes then looked to the beast that stood before Katie. He was closer to the dog than me.

I studied his body. His arms extended..he was holding a gun. A gun!

I swallowed at the weapon in his hands. It wasn't pointed at me though. It was aimed at the wolf. I could relax slightly. We had a common interest in mind, killing the thing standing in between me and my sister.

"HEY!" Cole shouted. The wolf growled at Katie and she let out a whimper.

What happened next I thought I would never have to see.

The wolf lunged at Katie and she covered her face trying to keep it's jaws off of her.

"NO!" My voice echoed through the woods. Birds flew from the tree tops.

A loud bang fired and smoke came from the gun at the end of Cole's hands. The echos returned, but not of my voice. Of dog whimpers.

I fell to my knees. My eyes blurring more and more as tears fell from them.

Cole ran to Katie as the wolf laid beside her. It's body slowly rising up and down. Cole hit it. It wasn't attacking her anymore. But Katie wasn't moving. She didn't stand up. Her chest was not moving up and down like the wolfs.

The snow that surrounded my precious sister was now stained red, melting from the warmth her blood gave it.

I took it one step at a time. Standing on one foot first and then the second. It took me 20 small steps to reach them. Cole looked back and forth from the dog to Katie. It was not going to get up, it knew to stay down. It was probably going to die. So was Katie. She was probably going to die.

"Come on." Cole spoke to me. He scooped up Katie in his arms and walked in the direction he came from.

I wiped my tears. I could not say a single thing. Where was he going? Taking us back to the cabin? Absolutely not. Was Katie going to survive? Did the wolf get her? Obviously. Cole was carrying her. Was she going to try and patch her up? Could she be patched up?

I stumbled along with them. Cole knew where he was going. He seemed in a hurry to get there.

Suddenly he stopped and turned to me.

"You have a job. Protect us." He looked deep into my eyes, it felt like my soul was touched. For a second I forgot that this is the same guy who was keeping me captive not even a couple days ago. He's the reason Katie is in his own arms right now.

He dropped the gun he used on the wolf in front of me. I took one look at the gun and back at him and picked it up. I nodded. I would protect us. From what though? Another wolf? I might just throw myself at it.

I wasn't going to make it out of these woods. Especially not without Katie.

Cole's POV

Adrenaline pumped through my veins like never before. I just shot a gun for the first time. It hit the beast and it fell to the ground. I should've shot it before it leaped at Katie. Shit.

I ran as fast as I could to her. Blood poured from her neck. Her hands covered he face. She did a good job trying to protect herself from the wolf but she was no match for it.

It didn't take me long to see that she was already dead. I needed to get to a safe place. Now. Emily needed to come with me. I knew that she wasn't going to come with unless I brought Katie.

I lifted her lifeless body into my arms and shut her eyes. Emily had come over to us and watched me closely.

"Come on." I told her. She did as she was told and followed behind. I was going back to the cabin.

The small one. The place no one else knew about. We would be safe there. How would I explain this to Zac? I would not tell him about this. That was how.

Where do I tell him I was all night when I go back? How do I get Emily out of here without him knowing? How do we keep living our life here? Surely once Emily is out of these woods she would go to the police. Maybe it was time for that. Doesn't matter. I'll figure that all out later.

Right now I needed to get us to safety.
