Ode to the Sea

100 20 31

Give fire to my vision, oh fair, broad Sea

That I may behold your hidden beauty.

And as the yawning sun's fiery gaze

Clothes your crests forever ablaze,

I remember of my lunacy,

How I had shunned such radiance and glory.

Give fire to my songs, oh fair, broad Sea,

For they are chained, lifeless, unworthy.

And as the wind's gentle caressing

Joins your voice's eternal whispering,

I let flow the tears of my vanity

For now I know your song is the mighty.

O Sea, here in my wretched citadel

I now crave that in your thoughts I dwell.

Send warmth into the songs of my youth,

Enlighten my visions of the truth—

For you alone cuts pride and falsity,

And for you alone I set my soul free.
