Redbone - Childish Gambino

I never really like getting personal.

Trusting someone enough to let them know about a part of me I hated was never something I wanted to get into.

It's a constant aspect of my life that I'm always avoiding, even though it burns the back of my mind everyday.

But as much as I can tell myself that, I seem to know a lot about the people around me. More importantly, their families.

Aiden has an older sister, Matt has a younger brother, Jordan is an only child. Aiden and Matt have both their parents in their lives, Jordan was raised by his father. But me? The only thing they know is that I have two sisters and parents.

What I exclude is that my parents haven't been actively present in my life for the past fifteen years, only showing up a few days a month before going back on "business trips."

Even then, for the little time they were home, few words were spoken between us. Since silence was practically the only treatment we got from them, the three of us just stayed around each other growing up.

It was the three of us and the two of them.

Some days I genuinely think about why they had me and my sisters. I mean, why have kids if the only thing you're there for is to pay the bills and ask what they want for their birthday once a year.

And I continue to contemplate it as I talk to my sister on the phone. "How many more days until you come back?" Her words sound deflated, and I can tell she's upset. What about? I don't know yet.

Since I'm not a human calculator and I've never really been good at math, I estimate. "At least seven weeks Jas," I can hear her sigh through the phone and it only makes a pit grow in my stomach. "I know, but they only give us a few days off. I'm pretty sure Eden gets off earlier than I do."

"I called her already." she tells me. "She comes home two days before you."

I adjust my spot on the couch before answering her, noticing that her voice is low and subtle. Anything but the bubbly sister I know I have. "So what about you? Anything going on over there?" I start to pry.

I start to settle when I hear her let out a deep breath. Then, she starts by talking about her boy problems. This guy she started talking to at the beginning of the month has already started acting uninterested.

I sit back and listen as emotion starts to come back to her voice when she goes on a frantic ramble. She starts ranting about how he comments under other girl's posts, or how he'll text her first and then leave her on delivered for a few hours.

"It's stupid to complain about, I know." she sighs.

"It's not stupid Jas," I stop her right there.

"That's because you don't know how I feel. I can barely explain it myself." she retorts. "And you Alex, you never had to worry about this stuff."

Hearing footsteps near from behind me I draw my eyes to the source. When my eyes fall on Evie she gives me a light smile before sitting down on the other end of the couch, a bowl of cereal present in her hands.

"You're right, I don't know how you feel. But I know you're probably annoyed..." I point out. "Upset clearly. But you seem to still like him." I explain my thoughts on her situation. "Which I'm a bit confused about because he sounds like an asshole to me."

"Well that's because you don't know him." Even after all that complaining, Jasmine chooses to defend him against my allegations. "He was nice before."

"Exactly. He was nice before." I throw her words back in her face. "And I don't need to know him to know that the kid's an asshole. And an idiot."
