            “Checkmate!” I howled.

Jacob snorted. “Summer, this isn’t chess—it’s Checkers.”

I shrugged. “Looks the same to me.”

“Let me guess—your not a big time Checkers player?”

I smiled a little. “Uh, no.”

We were in my bedroom; I was sitting on the floor, and Jacob was lounging on my messy bed, leaning over the edge so he could reach the Checker’s board I’d found in one of the old linen closets.

I’d never played the game before, and Jacob felt the need to play a couple matches with me, just to lower my self esteem a little; I agreed half-heartedly.

It had been two weeks since that first day in Forks, when I met Jacob; now, rarely a day went by when Jake didn’t drop by and hang out. Usually, our casual hangouts digressed into the late evenings, and that’s when our competitive sides made their mark; we played tons of board games every evening, just enjoying one another’s company.

Jacob was my best friend, no doubt about it; we got along super well, and for some reason—I’d been stumped by this many a night—he seemed to enjoy my company.

Now, I understand how this may sound like I’m a real downer, but I swear I’m not; I just don’t find myself a very suitable friend. I mean, I like to be alone—except with Jacob, I’d definitely choose being with him than being alone—I have a terrible past, I don’t like to share, I get really awkward and my only friends in my entire life have been Jacob and Kyle—not that he had a choice, or anything.

Jacob pulled back, leaning on his hand. “This is boring—can we go for a walk, or something?”

I rolled my eyes. “Let’s go drive around.”

He glanced at the clock. “It’s like, twelve o’clock!”

“Come on, it’ll be fun!” I stood up, grabbing his hand and tugging him to his feet, then running to the spiral staircase.

He followed after me, stopping when I stopped. “What?” He asked. “Aren’t we going?”

I slapped my hand over his mouth. “Geez, Jacob!” I whispered hoarsely, “You’ll blow our cover! Kyle’s still awake, downstairs, watching TV—we have to sneak past him. He’ll never let us out.”

            I saw Jacob’s eyes roll.

“Come on,” I whispered, tiptoeing down the stairs. “Make any noise, and I’ll kill you myself.”
