IGNOMINY

WHEN IRINA ARRIVED at the bottom of her driveway, she saw her neighbour, Dustin, on his porch calling for his cat near the trash can.

"Mews? Mews, is that you?" He called.

"No. It is Irina." Irina chuckled from her driveway.

"Very funny, Irina. There's something making a weird noise in my trash can." He told her. Irina furrowed her brows and made her way over to where he was standing. And to her surprise, there was a sort of gargling sound coming from the trash can, which was being knocked back and forth.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit." Dustin muttered, getting his Ghost Buster gear from his back and pointing it at the can as he approached it. Irina rolled her eyes and strode forwards, pulling the lid off the can in one swoop.

"Holy mother of God! You have no fear!" Dustin yelled in surprise, but Irina did nothing but stare down in utter confusion at the slimy little animal inside.

"Какого хрена (what the fuck)." She muttered.

The next morning after discovering the tiny lizard thing on Halloween with Dustin, Irina was reluctant to let him take it inside his house. He claimed it was his new discovery and he'd even named it D'Artagnan - or Dart for short. She hadn't slept well that night either. She just had a bad feeling. A gut feeling that something bad was going to happen.

Things were just getting to her lately. She was thinking about the future. And the past. Sitting in maths didn't help. Hearing Mr Mundy talk non-stop about algebra hurt her brain.

For some reason, she just couldn't stop thinking about her time in the lab. It was the only thing running through her mind. All the flashbacks and the trauma. She could feel the tears building up and burning in the corners of her eyes. It wasn't often that this happened - actual tears threatening to spill

She managed to keep them at bay until Mathematics ended. The relief that filled when she heard the bell signalling next lesson was satisfying. Her legs moved faster down the corridor on her route to the restrooms than they usually did. Luckily for her, nobody was occupying the restroom since it wasn't lunch or anything.

She let out a frustrated huff and let her bag slip off her shoulder when she got in front of the mirrors. That's when she let those tears fall. Irina wiped her eyes with the palms of her hands and leant her back against the wall.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't even hear the restroom door open and Carol and another girl walk in. Laurie, Irina thought her name was.
