In the month I've been in the palace so far, nothing has really happened to invoke a meeting like this. It's one-thirty in the morning, and there are a few guards and butlers around. Kai's been on the phone with his dad on and off, pacing the floor, and I haven't been caught up yet. All I know is that Lucy, Michael, and their two kids have been involved in some sort of accident.

One of the butlers has been in and out for drinks. Kai's currently sipping a coffee in between conversations with his dad, while I'm harbouring a cup of tea, worry worming its way through my brain.

Part of me wants to go and wake Annie, Patrick, and Dad up to hug them. My eyes are threatening tears, not knowing what's going on. The butlers are saying the news has caught wind of something going on, and have reported that an accident has happened, but nothing more.

Kai hangs up the phone, sits beside me, and finishes his coffee. My hand slips into his free one, squeezing hard and putting my head on his shoulder for comfort.

"They were coming back from a night out – not even work, just a family night together and they ended up getting into a five-car pile-up on the motorway. All of them: Lucy, Michael, Charlotte and Henry are in accident and emergency in London right now. Mum and Dad are there, too."

I nod and take that in for a second. "Okay, so, we better get there, then. I just need to get some clothes on—"

Kai shakes his head. "No, Peach. First off, you're on bed rest. Second, they don't need us to overcrowd them. We'll wait here, keep in contact and as we're the only royals right now in the palace, they'll need us to hold the fort, so to speak."

The fact he's still calling me Peach right now says so much. My heart snaps for him.

I frown. "You go, she's your sister—they're your family, Kai."

"Honestly, they want me to stay here. Dad already mentioned it. But thank you for the offer."

I sigh. "Whatever happens, I'm here for you, okay?"

He stares at me seriously. "I fucking love you."

My heart pounds in its snapped form. I hate this for him and the family, but the fact he's remaining as sweet as anything has me weak at the knees. "I love you too. Listen to me, Kai, if you need to go to London, just go. I can handle whatever it is, okay?"

"You're amazing, Peach. We need to discuss this... thing with Brayden."

I shake my head. "It doesn't matter. Lucy, Michael and the kids matter right now."

"The palace press will sort out the Brayden thing. Whatever he's said, it doesn't matter. We'll rebuke it, or whatever is necessary. He can't do anything to hurt you, or us," Kai says.
