xxv. HIDE AND NEVER FORGET.

you said don't open your eyes till you've counted to ten and i placed my hands over my mouth while you found a place to hide. i heard the sound of creaking floors and hollowed laughter as you tip toed down my spine, finding a place in the corner of my mind. you whispered, "come and get me" and i wondered if the curtains were playing tricks on me, searching for you before i had even finished counting. i looked between walls, high in the attic, under the bed where i feared old past monsters would be found instead of you. you laughed, you began to scratch at my cerebellum, my balance becoming flimsy as i fell to the wooden floors. you tore my thoughts up into nothing less of shreds, ripping apart my mind until you sat in the middle. you became everything i ever thought about. you were the lyrics in my favorite song, the missing person in the passenger seat on long drives. you were the remembered movie lines, the reason i couldn't get up in the morning.

when i finally hit ten, i had found you, but it was too late for i had lost at my own game of hide and seek.
