I blink into consciousness, tentatively checking to see if the humming and the pain still exists. It does. It returns like a tide crashing behind my eyes. It blares at full volume. The people are still in their dopey bliss. Why can't I get that? Why does my brain chatter like teeth?
Our tank emerges into the final hatch. Through blurry vision, I discover we're third in line to leave the ship.
It's happening. We're leaving ARC10.
I shrink back. I claw through the bodies in terror. I swivel closer to the back of the tank and hope that this inch will keep me far enough away where the looming danger of the unknown won't touch me yet.
No such luck. The port lowers and brightness blinds me. I squint as my unaccustomed eyes peep at this strange planet's daylight.
The shock sends me back into darkness.
