The ride back to my house is silent with both of us lost in our own thoughts. When Nick pulls his truck up in front of my dark house, I turn to him. "I had fun tonight, thanks" I say. Nick nods in acknowledgment and says "I'm sorry the first half didn't go so well. It was my fault." I look down at my muddy dress and flick a wet piece of hair off my face "Eh, we made up for it" I grin. Nick gives me a smile in return before hopping out of the truck and coming to open the passenger door for me. I stand there awkwardly, should I give him a hug? A handshake? Nick decides for me as he smiles and gives me a small wave before sticking his hands in his pockets and walking back to his driver side door. I guess that will have to do.

I take a step towards my driveway before making a decision. I stop and turn back, running up to his open window and say "Please don't shut me out again after tonight. Don't pretend to forget me anymore."

Nick gives me an unreadable expression before nodding his head slightly.

"Friends?" He says, sticking his hand out the window. I grasp it and shake with a wide smile "friends."

I practically skip into my house afterwards, because Nick Parker is my friend again.

I have arrived safely back in my room without any Marilee confrontations when I get a text alert. I grab my phone and smile to see it's a picture message from Nick. I open the photo and start to laugh, quickly throwing a hand over my mouth to stifle it. It's a picture of my shoes. I must of left them in his truck.

Nick: This is becoming a habit
Mia: Luke Skywalker saves the day, again! Thank you.
Nick: That's what friends do.
Mia: :)

..

The next morning I'm wakened by pounding on my bedroom door. "Mia!" I hear Marilee yell. I roll to my side groggily and look at the time. It's 9 am on a holiday why is she waking me up?

"Mia! Open the door!"

"Hold on" I grunt, untangling myself from the sheets. I stumble to the door and unlock it, swinging it open.

"Well about time!" Marilee says, tapping her foot in annoyance. "Time for what?" I ask. Marilee looks me up and down "What in the world happened to you?" I glance down, quickly noticing I'm still in my clothes from last night. I discreetly wipe a piece of mud off my arm. "Nothing, was just out late with friends. Why are you banging on my door so early?"

Marilee rolls her eyes "It's thanksgiving Mia! And we have big plans. I needed to make sure you were up and getting yourself ready for tonight."

I sigh, I forgot all about our big dinner plans with the Vaughn family. "What time are we supposed to be there?"

"5 o'clock" Marilee snaps her fingers. "Now get yourself cleaned up" she demands as she turns and walks out. I roll my eyes behind her back as I close and lock my door. How many hours does she think I need to make myself presentable? I tuck a muddy piece of hair behind my ear and cringe. Ok, maybe I should shower.

After a long hot shower and a change of my bedsheets I climb back into bed in my towel and drift off for a couple more hours. Eventually I'm awoken by the ding of a text alert:

Nick: are you free tonight?
Mia: unfortunately not.. dinner plans with Coles family.
Nick: you two got back together?
Mia: no!! Apparently nobody told the parents we broke up.
Nick: awkward
Mia: tell me about it
Mia: Maybe I could see you after?
Nick: sure, maybe

It's honestly really hard to turn down Nicks offer to hangout. My mind knows I need to follow through with this stupid dinner, but my heart is begging me to forget it and say yes to Nick instead. I put my phone down with a loud audible sigh and start getting ready.
