"Everyone, welcome to the snake pit."

The Prefects announce as they lead us into the Slytherin common room. It's deluxe and posh. From expensive leather couches to delicate little vases on the tables, it's a clear show of class and wealth. Of course, most of the luxury is from the generous donations of all the pure-blood families. And soon, advancements would also be made in the name of mine.

A meek little boy takes a seat on one of the couches, but immediately scrambles away when the six of us takes our seat alongside him.

We snicker at his silly reaction, before making ourselves comfortable on the cosy couch. Vince and Greg take out their own jade charms and hang it on both couches. Another benefit from these trusty location markers is that it refrains unwanted guests from intruding our claimed territory. Whoever trespasses, whoever's arse catches on fire.

"Ah, this already feels like home enough." Daphne relaxingly leans her head back onto the couch across from me, closing her eyes.

"You can say that again." Blaise imitates from beside her and closes his eyes as well.

While the others were quietly taking in the luxury of the room, I find myself darting my eyes all across the room, searching for imperfections to improve.

"Your eyes are moving so fast, one would think that you're getting possessed from invisible demons," Draco comments from beside me.

"I'm searching for places in the room to perfect," I briefly explain, my eyes not slowing down. "You think the Gryffindor common room has a bite of this luxury from my mother's donations?"

"Knowing Nicholas with the basic knowledge I have of your massive family, he'd most likely have turned down her offers," He nonchalantly replies with full confidence.

I stop flickering my eyes around and turn my attention back on him, narrowing my eyes a little. "Suspicious how you seem to know him more than I do these days. Are you sure you haven't been secretly spending time with him behind my back?"

"Me? Crossing you behind your back? As if you'd ever let me get away with it alive."

We chat a little more, about our anticipation for the new year—also casually throwing in a few harmless insults to each other in between—until we ourselves become sleepy. By the time our conversation ended, it was only the six of us left as all of the other students returned to their dorms. The other four of us fell deep asleep on the couches.

I drag a half-asleep Daphne to our dorm, while Draco had to singlehandedly lead a dream-walking Greg, a delirious Blaise who kept on ranting nonstop about his dream in Italian, and a snoring, dead asleep Vince on the ground who Draco had to drag by the arm to their dorms.
