No matter how tired we both were, we did not sleep well at all. My mind seemed alive as my body shut down, filling me with confusing dreams and memories I would have rather not have. Monique’s dreams plagued me too, bringing forward pictures of a burning village, a woman and man standing in the flames with a boy in their arms and a young soldier. My dreams seemed intent on destroying me it seemed. Memories of kissing Roy and walking hand in hand with him along the streets stabbed my heart. Similar pictures, reflecting my still burning love for the man I killed, appeared one after the after till all of a sudden, a dark memory appeared.

I walked stealthily through the poorly lit streets, my shoes seeming to click loudly in the eerie silence. I turned my head again to look behind me, feeling completely on edge, as I made my way doubtfully through London.

The sun had long gone and the moon was currently lost behind the gathering clouds, plunging the whole city into darkness and only the occasional laughter of drunken men or the clattering of bins interrupted the frightening stillness.

A gun shot, not far off, echoed through the streets, bouncing off walls as it made its way to my ears. I cocked my head at the sound and smiled wryly. Obviously, I was not the only one planning something tonight.

Then I saw it. A dark alley appeared out of the blue and down it, a metal staircase stretched up along the damp and filthy wall. My heart thudded loudly in my chest as I gazed at it, fury and hurt beginning to grow in me.

I strode towards it, reaching for the cloth in my handbag as I climbed the staircase quietly, taking each step slowly as I went. I paused at the top and stared at the door. Hatred bubbled in me as I remembered the other night.

I did not hesitate. My fingers wrapped around the doorknob and turned it. I strode in, please to find the door unlocked. As soon as I entered the rundown apartment, the sound of the match, roaring from the TV and the sizzling of cooking came to my ears along with two voices. I stepped quietly, clutching the cloth harder in my balled up fists, as I followed the sound of cooking, assuming it would be the woman in there. I assumed right when I peered around the door to see a lady, more or less my age, with her back to me as she stirred something in the pan. I came up behind her and stood there, inspecting her.

“Roy? Do you prefer…” I cut her short, slipping my hand around her neck and bringing the cloth to her face.

She struggled before falling limply into my arms. I smiled and laid her down on the floor on her stomach as I heard footsteps in the corridor. I stepped away to stand behind the open door as a half-naked Roy entered, looking around before his eyes landed on the kitchen floor.

“Lizzie!” He cried, lurching forward to kneel on the floor, taking her in his arms as he shook her desperately.

I crept up behind him and spoke clearly, “Roy.”

He swung around to face me, opening his mouth to cry out my name before I swung my fist into his nose. He fell back, clutching at his nose which was bleeding freely as I grabbed him, swinging him around before pinning him to the floor.
