The next day when I woke up, my mother still wasn't home. I got ready for the day and left to go to the compound. I was working on a new serum so I stayed extra late.

Once I got home, I thanked the driver and walked inside. It was about 10:30pm. I closed the door behind me and turned around to face my empty house.

At least....that's what I thought.

I heard someone walking in the living room. I quietly walked up behind the wall and peered my head into the living room. And I saw... my mother?

I quietly walked into the living room.

"Mom?" I asked

She turned around and I could see the tears in her eyes.

"Oh Chloe!" she says while embracing me in a hug

I hug back.

"I was so worried about you." she says

"Why?" I ask

"When I came home, you weren't here." she says

"Oh sorry, I was at the compound." I say

She gives me a little smile.

"Where we're you for the past day?" I ask her

"I was at a meeting with the founders." she says

"You didn't leave me a note or tell me." I say

"I'm sorry, I got called to the meeting and had to leave immediately." she says

She was acting like nothing ever happened. I knew something was up because she never leaves without telling me, even if it's for a big meeting.

"Well, it's getting late. You better go and get some sleep." she says

I give her one last hug before walking upstairs.

I change into my pyjamas, brush my teeth and wash my face.

I then get into bed. Just at that moment, my mother walks in. She comes over and sits on my bed. I sit up while still being under my covers.

"Are you feeling alright?" she asks while stroking my hair

"Yeah." I say quietly

"I'm sorry I left you alone for a day without telling you." she says

"Oh, it's alright." I say

"I'll make it up to you." she says

I give a little smile.

She gives me a kiss on my forehead and gives me one last hug before turning off the lights and closing the door. I lay my head down on my fluffy pillow and close my eyes. I drift away to sleep.
