We pull up the hospital not long later and I unbuckle my belt and stand up.

Turner comes round the back and we lower the stretcher onto the ground while the doctors gather round.

"Six year old male, possible septic shock from a second degree burn on his hand. High flow oxygen was given, no other medications were needed. He was slightly tachycardic but I think he was just nervous because his heart rate came back down slightly. His BP was 80/63 and a temp of 101." I tell them and they all nod their heads as we push him into a hospital room.

The doctors begin to swarm around him and he looks a little startled that they aren't telling him what they're doing.

His eyes widen and I see his breathing begin to quicken as he looks around at all the doctors poking him.

The heart monitor they switched him too picks it up too and I hear one of the nurses say he's very tachycardic but he's not, he's just nervous.

How are they ever going to get accurate information if them poking and prodding him makes him so nervous that it increases his heart rate and blood pressure.

I look at the main doctor who's writing things down and pull her to the side.

"Hey, Spencer is on the spectrum and he doesn't like people touching him, you've got to ask first and right now his heart rate is reaching 150 BPM. Can you ask them to step away and ask him before they do anything? I know it's an emergent situation but if he's scared your not going to get what you need." I tell her and she looks at me like I'm crazy to think that his mental health can affect his physical health.

"Look at the monitors. When they first connected him his heart rate was 123BPM and now it's 150 because he's nervous and your going to write that down thinking he's tachycardic because of the infection when really it's because he's scared. You need to talk to him first if you want accurate information. You need him calm before he flips out too. I know your the doctor but I'm telling you, asking first would be faster and easier on everyone." I explain and she reluctantly nods her head.

She walks back into the room and she speaks to the nurses and they all stop prodding and poking him and his heart rate slows down to slightly more normal pace.
