CHAPTER EIGHT

Today I was breaking free. Today I was breaking out of castle walls after a week of staying here. I already was locked in my chambers on my second day after trying to escape to go shopping with Chelsea and Heidi. What more could they do to me? Nothing, that's what.

Am I feeling quite rebellious? Yes. My mates just can't forbid me from doing things and lock me up like I'm some sort of pet. I demand my independence. I was still coming to terms with me being their future Queen and by the way they were treating me, it would seem like it would take longer or possibly never for me to come to terms with being their future Queen. They need to respect me if I am to be their equal.

I knew I couldn't escape Volterra, so that was out of the plan. I also really like Marcus. He's been the only mate I like to confide in, the others being Chelsea, Heidi, and surprisingly Jane. Jane and I had become friends during my first week here and my relationship with Felix and Demetri was improving as well. I just couldn't leave them behind. And so, my plan was just to merely shop around town. Get some jeans and shirts for my wardrobe was seriously lacking them. My wardrobe was just dresses, shoes, and other clothing items so to speak. Heidi explained this by saying that the Volturi had a strict dress code. It would seem that the Volturi highly disagreed with modern times when it came to women's clothing. As future Queen, however, I would reverse that by amending the dress code to include women wearing shirts and pants as long as it is professional.

I still hadn't given Aro permission to read my thoughts and memories and I knew that disappointed him. He hadn't gained my trust yet. With Caius, I was angry. He wouldn't let me be independent. It warms my dead heart to know that he just wants to protect me, but he overdoes it.

The plan for my temporary escape would begin after feeding time. I would feed and go excuse myself to work on paperwork and practice royal etiquette. My mates and Chelsea, Heidi, and now Jane, were all helping me transition into royalty. My mates taught me how to do paperwork and challenged me on judging by the law and Chelsea, Heidi, and Jane taught me proper etiquette. It was strange for me to be now a royal after defying royal rule back in the American Revolution. It was quite ironic.

As I checked and verified paperwork of vampires around the world reporting that a new vampire being added to their coven, a knock sounded at my door. "Come in!" I say.

Demetri walks in and bows. "The humans are about to enter the throne room, my Lady. Heidi's got the tour guide running. The masters have asked me to escort you to the throne room as they are too busy with a trial at the moment."

I nod and stand up from my desk. "Very well, lead the way, my dude."

Demetri laughs. "You're feeling way more better than you did a few days ago."

"Well, I'm going to make myself more miserable if I continue to act like it." I tell him.

"Wise words." he replies.

"I know." I say as he escorts me down the stairs to the throne room.

"The masters await." he says as he opens the doors.

"Ah, Amity!" Aro stands up from his seat. It was obvious they were still in a trial for a man with matted hair was on his knees in the center of the room. He looks dismayed. "My mate, please come, come. Sit." he gestures to his throne. "The humans will be here soon." I sit down and face the man in trial. "Amity," says Aro. "As we wait and since you are here with us, we will have you do your first judging today. This man, Jeremy Turbin, has been accused of creating immortal children."

I nod. Creating immortal children was a crime. It could give you an immediate death sentence if you were found guilty. "Is that true?" I ask the suspect.

The man shakes his head. "No. No."

He was lying. "Liar."

The man is taken back. "What? No, I'm telling you the truth. Please believe me!"

I laugh and shake my head. Caius to my left smirks. "No, no you are not. See, I have a gift. This gift allows me to see who speaks truth or not. You have created immortal children. Caius?"

"Guilty." his smirk grows larger.

"Aro?"

"Guilty."

"Marcus?"

"Guilty."

"Jeremy Turbin, I and your kings pronounce you guilty. Your sentence will be death. May God bless your soul. Felix, Demetri, we don't have all day. I would like to feed please."

"Please! No! I will do anything!" pleads the man.

I look at him. "Yes, yes you will. What you will do is let Felix here finish out your sentence. May God bless your soul." I nod at Felix and Demetri grabs the man's arms while Felix decapitates the suspect.

"Excellent decision, il mio amore." Aro praises me.

"You do us very proud, carissima." says Caius.

"Yes, very well done." Marcus says through his raspy voice. I had learned that the cause for his raspy, depressed voice was because of the loss of his late wife, Didyme, who was also Aro's sister. He was still in mourning, though I have been told that he seems to have been getting better after my arrival.

I unconsciously purr at their praise and they purr back. The doors fly open and Heidi walks in with a smirk while the tourists files in behind her. Aro walks down to the second step before spreading his arms wide. "Welcome to Volterra, my dear friends! This is your last stop, I'm afraid. Bon appetit!"

My eyes turn pitch black as I speed over to a woman and sink my teeth into her neck, savoring her blood. Screams erupt around the room as one by one the tourists had their blood drained from them. I drank about three people before wiping off the excess blood from my mouth with my finger before sucking it dry.

"Aro?" I ask. His eyes were bright red, a sign of just being fed. "May I be excused? I still have paperwork to do."

"Of course, mia cara. I'm glad that you are taking your duties seriously. Demetri will escort you back, I'm sure?" he tells me.

"Of course, master." says Demetri.

I smirk as I exit the room. My independence from this castle after being locked in it for a week was about to arrive.
