CHAPTER ONE.

FIVE YEARS AGO.

Liliana couldn't believe it. Her best friend was graduating. The Grant girl was incredibly proud of her, but now Lily was going to be alone. Sure, she had other "friends", but none of them were Monika Czinano.

She had known Monika since they were in elementary school. They were best friends, inseparable, and everyone knew it. If you messed with one, you got the other. Normally, it was Monika defending Liliana like she was her child.

At the graduation, Lily sat with Monika's. Lily's mother, Jess, and older sister, Alina, near her. Monika's sisters sat on her other side.

"Monika Czinano," the principal of Watertown-Mayer announced. They watch from the section they were in as Monika walks up and across the stage, getting her diploma. Liliana wipes at a few tears on her cheeks.

After the ceremony, Monika found the group of her family and the Grant women outside. The class had to take pictures before they left.

Monika's parents hug her first and then her sisters. Alina and Jess even gave the Czinano a hug. Then, Monika turned to Liliana, her eyes softening when she saw she was crying.

"Lils," Monika says, wrapping her arms around Liliana.

The girl sniffed, "I'm gonna miss you," she says, feeling Monika press a kiss to her head.

"I'll miss you too, but we have all summer, okay? And you can help me move when the time comes," Monika says and Liliana nods.

Lily pulled away, looking up at the blonde, "When I graduate in two years, I'm coming to Iowa."

A smile plays on Monika's lips, "You'd better."

lilygrant, mon :(( you have no clue how proud i am of you. you have been my best friend since we were little little and this bond is something i wouldn't replace for the world. you're my big sister, no doubt about it, and i definitely should've listened to you when you told me to make more friends that weren't you. the next two years are gonna be rough without you by my side, but you're moving on to bigger and better things. i'm ready to watch my girl as a hawkeye. iowa's not ready for you. i love you, babe ❤️

monika_czinano, SHE'S FOLLOWING IN MY FOOTSTEPS (minus the basketball)!!! liliana!!!! you did it babe!!! my little sister is coming to college with me. i have missed going to school with you so much, but you came to so many games so i didn't have to miss you too much. it was amazing to see you walk across that stage today, opening a new chapter of your life. iowa is not ready for the two of us. congratulations and i love you so much, lily.
