Issues and Connection

After leaving their house, Jasper insisted on riding his own bike to my house to introduce himself to my parents as a new friend. Really I knew he just wanted to make them think positively of him when we made our relationship public. Now, I know what you're thinking, no, we're not dating privately yet but we're certainly closed off to other people. I made it clear that regardless of the fact that we were mates, I wanted to take it slow and form a deeper bond which he understood and respected.

When we got to my house I made sure we weren't holding hands, I walked over to the door and I was shocked when it opened in front of us. My mom was standing there smiling.

"Well hello, I'm Patricia, Sage's mother. I'm so happy she's made a new friend, that was nearly impossible for her. What's your name?"

Wow mom, way to be forward. Thankfully it didn't seem to bother Jasper though I did notice his eyebrow quirk when he heard my mom call me Sage, and I knew I'd have to explain it to him later.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Patricia, I'm very glad to be a friend of Sage's and I look forward to getting to know her. I must be leaving now, my parents want me home for dinner."

My mom thankfully got the message and left us alone to say goodbye. I looked up at him sadly. I didn't want him to go, he was already my comfort person. You may say it's the mate bond or his empath skills, but I say it's him. He smiled at me before taping my nose.

"Don't frown Darlin, I'm not going home, I'm gonna go finish my hunt, then I'll return so we can spend some time together tonight. Now go, eat, I know your lunch got so rudely interrupted."

His care already for me made my heart flutter. He briefly kissed my forehead before guiding me softly toward the door. I turned and winked at him before sliding inside the house smiling like a schoolgirl. I shrieked when I saw my mom standing there smiling. Sometimes I swear to you she was such a child.

"Mom, it's nothing. He's my friend, now I wanna go shower please, then can we eat??"

She nodded and let me go upstairs passively telling me that we're having pizza for dinner. I hopped into the shower after picking a playlist that made me feel like I was on a sugar high. I got dressed in my slouchy clothes, a pair of tights and an oversized sweater with a pair of houseshoes. I jumped downstairs and slid into the kitchen and sat down at the table before I tucked into a huge slice of meat lovers pizza with extra hot sauce. I ate two and a half slices of pizza and 3 glasses of Dr. Pepper before I ran back up to my room where to my sadness Jasper wasn't there. I opened the window to get some fresh air and turned around to grab my comfort book, "The Skeleton Crew", by Stephen King. I nestled down into my bed and began reading after I turned on some quiet music.

"Hey Darlin, I hope I haven't kept you too long."

I shrieked softly before I smiled at him.

"I was dying of boredom Jasper! How could you do that to me!"

I used a clearly sarcastic voice so he knew I was kidding and I made sure to feel nothing but joy and peace to ease his worries. I was happy when he hopped into my room and sat on the chair by my desk. He was stupidly handsome and I was thankful that he was my mate. Leo was still seething but I was thankful that Monroe and Tallulah were able to get him to leave us alone to connect.

"So Darlin, I thought your name was Lynn. Why'd your mom call you Sage?"

Damn... straight to the point I guess. I sighed and closed my book not caring about the page number because I'd read it so much I didn't bother.

"Well... My name is actually Sagelynn. It's a mouthful, but after dealing with being known as "Smokey Sage" in high school when someone claimed they smelled cigarettes on me and dealing with my past I wanted a fresh start. So no, I didn't technically lie about my name, I just told you the version of it I prefer to be called. My mom and dad don't care about whether or not I'm okay with them calling me that so I've dropped asking them to. I'm sorry if you feel I lied to you."

I choked off at the end cuz the absolute last thing I wanted was for him to feel like I lied to him at the beginning of our relationship. When he startled me by flashing towards me and hugging me tightly I was thankful he's an empath.

"No no sugar, I'm not mad I was just curious about it. If you'd rather be called Lynn or a variation of that instead of the beautiful name I think you've been given I'm more than happy to do so. So please, no tears."

I nodded and nuzzled into him which caused him to begin purring, before I could even ask why he explained that vampires do it to calm their mate. I stopped talking and just enjoyed being in his arms. We stayed like that until we were interrupted by a knock on my door and before I could look, he'd flashed out the window so I acted quick and grabbed my book before I yelled come in.

"Honey, it's 11pm on a school night, maybe you should think about going to sleep okay?"

My mom didn't give me the opportunity to respond before she shut the light and closed the door. I huffed angrily but smiled when I saw Jasper come back through my window.

"Well that's messed up. But how about we cuddle and watch a movie until you fall asleep?"

I nodded and picked "The Magnificent Seven" from 1960 since he was a cowboy, I'd hoped I'd be able to get away with it. He chuckled and slipped in beside me. I honestly could tell he was using his power but I appreciated it. I felt myself slip into a peaceful sleep and smiled softly as I felt him kiss my forehead.

The next few weeks went the same, school, cruise through the forest, homework, chill with Jasper and repeat well, I spent time with Bella too every day which was nice. Oh, did I mention, Jasper and I made our relationship public. I was happy with how close my best friend and Edward were getting but I was nervous because of the text that woke me up. I hated it because it was Saturday, my slouchy movie day with Jasper.

We need to talk. Come over now.

I had no clue what it was about but I knew it couldn't help but be scared. Bella never sent me angry sounding texts. I rushed to get ready and I sped to her house as fast as I could. When I got there she was standing at the door, I knew this would be bad, Charlie wasn't home so it was going to be loud. She glared at me and shot her hand towards her room. I went there and she slammed the door behind us before she turned her gaze to me.

"Some friggin best friend you turned out to be! You ditched me to hangout with them all the damn time when you know how I feel about Edward and you know Rose hates me. Yea I know that you're dating Jasper but still! And yesterday when I go to confront Edward about my suspicions about them he tells me that you know too! I mean for real Lynn who does that!"

I let her have her little rant but I needed her to listen to me.

"So it's wrong to spend time with my boyfriend and his family? I'm sorry you felt like I abandoned you but I didn't. And as for their secret I found out on my own cuz I saw something. I didn't tell you because it wasn't my place, but they know something about me that I don't want known either."

I knew I made a mistake when I brought up my secret. Her face turned as red as a lobster.

"YOU HAVE A SECRET FROM ME!? I'M SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR BEST FRIEND AND THEY KNOW BEFORE ME!? Get out of my house and don't talk to me again. I hate you."

That hurt. I visibly shrank and nodded before walking towards the door. Before I closed the door one behind me I mumbled one thing.

"I'm sorry Bella, I really didn't mean to hurt you. But you abandoning me like all the others shows me you're just like everyone else. Goodbye Isabella."

I didn't know what to do now so I sped to the cliff that was Jasper's and my spot and I wept. He showed up like I knew he would. Jasper hugged me and purred softly but this time the sobbing didn't stop.

Lord I hope we can get passed this, but only time will tell.
