Nash and Lauren

I trudged into the Biology Lab on the second floor of the school, pouting as I dropped my backpack on the floor. My sweater sagged depressingly on my shoulders, reflecting my personality that day. My lab partner, Nash, long time crush, was already sitting at our lab table, goggles on and ready to go. He smiled and waved at me as I sat down, but I just gave him a I-can’t-believe-we’re-doing-this kind of look. He made a sympathetic gaze back, but still handed me my glasses. We both looked up to our Bio teacher.

“OK, for today’s cat dissection, you’ll first need your scalpel,” he started, picking up the silver scalpel on the tray and holding it up. He continued to preach about the importance of the cleanliness of the animal and utensils. He droned on and on and my head got lower and lower as the instruction followed. Yes, Nash and I were dissecting a cat today.

“Ew, Nash!” I screeched as he pulled off a chunk of cat fur and skin. He held it up in the air with his tweezers, laughing.

“What?” he asked, holding the piece out to me. I jumped out of my chair, and stood on top of it, trying to get away. “Oh, calm down, Lauren. It’s already dead,” he asked, holding out his hand to me. I looked over at my teacher, who still hadn’t noticed and sighed. I grabbed onto his hand as he dropped the piece of skin. Nash grabbed my waist and pulled me down off the chair.

“Thanks,” I said, brushing some not-actually-there stuff off my jeans.

“Of course,” Nash said, still holding onto one of my hands. He looked me in the eyes, and all time was frozen for a second. I stared into the ocean of blue in front of me as they glanced up and down from my eyes to my lips. My mouth parted a little bit, in shock. Just as we were about to lean in, I realized what was going on.

Jumping back, I coughed. “Oh… sorry… I didn’t… I mean…” I mumbled, looking down at the floor. Nash got an adorable smile of his face, grabbing my arm.

“No, it’s okay. I really like you, I mean it.”

“What?”

“I really like you, Lauren.”

“Oh…” I was at a loss for words. I’ve liked him for such a long time. He’s finally noticed! “I love you, too.” It slipped out. I just said ‘love’. Not ‘really like’. ‘LOVE’.

“Did you… did you just say what I think you said?” Nash said in his deep voice, a smile pulling at the edges of his lips.

“I… I uh…” I looked down. Pulling off his glove, Nash slipped his fingers under my chin and kissed me.

“I love you, too.”
