Matt Espinosa Imagine

You could feel the tears on your cheeks. They were hot, burning your skin, and dripped down your face. You’re heart literally dropped down from your chest to your stomach, making a pit in the middle of your torso. The sadness was unbearable, the kind that made your head throb and lips quiver. Your fingers were shaking and your knees knocked together as Jennifer spoke.

“We’re so heartily sorry, to send you guys home. You’re all very talented, but this just wasn’t your year.” You cried and buried your face into your hands as you stood on the stage. You ran a hand through your messy hair. You followed the guy in front of you off the stage, as your fellow contestants filed out of the theater. Everyone else was crying, and the bright warm sunshine of Hollywood poured through the windows of the lobby didn’t seem to make you any more okay with the situation.

You’d just been kicked off American Idol. It had always been your dream and when your time finally came, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr told you it was time to go. But you hadn’t even started. Your mind swirled with bad thoughts. The other failing contestants hugged their relatives. You parents couldn’t be here; their jobs were too demanding. The only person that had offered to come was your boyfriend, Matt. He was always there for you. He never passed up the opportunity to be there for you to do something with you. He stood over by the windows, gazing out over the ocean, not a care in the world.

You admired this about him; he never let bad things get to him. He could shut himself out for a while and when he came back, he’d be perfectly fine. IT was a respectable thing. You wished that you could do that. He turned his head towards all the contestants and spotted you. The mascara smudges and shiny tears on your face told the story. He didn’t even have to ask.

“Hey, babe,” he said in a sympathetic tone, his voice quiet. He reached out and pulled you into his chest. You just squeezed your eyes shut and cried. His strong arms rubbed up and down your back, the other on your arms. His continually kissed your forehead, whispering comforting things in your ear.

“It’s okay,” he said.

“You’re fine,” he said.

“You’re amazing without them,” he said.

“Shh,” he said.

“I love you,” he said.

You sniffed and quit the tears, but kept your body up against his. “They didn’t like me,” you said.

“No, no, don’t even say that, Y/N,” he said. “You’re perfect. You don’t need this!”  Matt kissed your forehead again.

“But…” you tried to say.

“No,” Matt stopped you. “Let’s go get some ice cream. Okay?”

“Okay.”
