Leaving Home

Oh how I love summer! The warm sun against my skin, not having to wear a jacket and not to mention, no school! Chicago is beautiful in the summer, which is where I live with my mom. My dad has never really been in the picture and it's always been my mom and I. She is a very successful fashion designer down in the city and is never at home, always at her studio. I've learned to be independent and do things my self.
Where was I? Oh right, summer. Me and my bestie Kelsey have soo much planned for the next 2 months and I can't wait! In 2 weeks I'm going to be turning 18 and I'm very excited for our fun plans and I'll finally be legal.

First day of summer, I go downstairs to the kitchen to make myself some breakfast.

"Oh morning mom, I thought you were at work?"

"Good Morning Mia, hunny I need to talk to you" she states

"Am I in trouble?" I ask worried and not knowing what to expect

"No your not, why did you do something that I should be aware of?" She asks with her 'what did you do face'

"Nothing, proceed" I reply quickly not wanting to get in trouble for no reason

"Last night I got a call and will be flying out to Italy for 6 months to be working on this special fashion collection. I know it's very last minute and I know you were looking forward to spending time together this summer. I'm sorry sweetie" she says

I am in total shock, I mean 6 months is a long time without your mother, I'm used to her never really being home but never thought she would be away for half a year! That's insane, but I looked at the bright side and I would have the whole house to myself for the next 6 months, I was kind of excited.
"When are you leaving" I ask

"Tomorrow night" she replies

"What! That's so soon, I thought you were going in a week or so, you're gonna miss my birthday?" I ask

"I'm soo sorry sweetie, but I've gotta do what I've gotta do" she says while grabbing a water from the fridge

"Ok, so I guess I'll call Kelsey and ask her to sleepover since I'm gonna be alone." I turn to grab my phone

"Oh no don't worry about that" my mom says in a happy tone while she stops me from calling. "You know my best friend Claire that lives in New York right?"

"Claire that rich lady that owns like half the city?" I ask while laughing at how successful that woman is, I wish I could be like her.

"Yes Claire, I talked to her yesterday and your going to be staying with her. She is more than happy to welcome you and can't wait to have you, we leave today and need to catch a flight so go pack up" she says as if everything is cool

WHAT? "MOM, what the hell! I'm not going all the way to fricken New York just to stay with this random lady and have her baby sit me for 6 months! What's wrong with you? How about my schooling or the matter that I will be leaving my friends, plans and whole life for half a year! This is insane! Are you messing with me?" I start to ask crazily

"Mia I'm serious, there is no way I'm letting you stay home alone for half the year. You will continue school there in New York at a wonderful school. Claire will be your second mother and will care for you. She is more than willing and is wealthy to give you everything you need. You should be happy and lucky to have gotten this wonderful opportunity."

"But-"

"No buts, this conversation is over. Now go to your room and start packing, we leave in 3 hours." My mom says annoyed

I am in total shock, is you're mom this crazy? Cuz mine sure is.

I go upstairs and start packing after I call Kelsey to come over and help me. After the packing and arguing and packing and arguing, I'm finally done and everything starts to feel real. I'm actually leaving my bed for 6 months.

Oh well, can't argue anymore with mom. I will miss you bed. I say my goodbyes to Kelsey even though she'll be coming to New York for my birthday, and will see her soon.

We head for the airport and finally get on our plane. Bye Chicago, see you in 6 months....
