He didn't remember being adopted.

That was one thing he'd always appreciated. The risk of early childhood trauma was still there, even when you were as young as he'd been, but he'd been blessed to avoid that. Instead, his earliest memory was of him already being a part of the family, learning a sign and its accompanying spoken word, not quite being able to hear what was going on in the other room but having a feeling it had something to do with his new sister.

It was never strange to him that he didn't really look like his other siblings or his parents. They were his family. He was loved.

That was all that mattered.
