"Y/N, they're here. Get everything ready."

"Y-yes sir", I said nervously as I hurried back and forth in the ward, making sure I had everything that I would be needing. It was my first official expedition and even though I was in training for two years, I didn't want to mess this up. I was prepared for all possible medical emergencies but with the expeditions outside the walls, one could never be fully prepared. I impatiently waited and not long after, the door to the infirmary opened.

I saw a bunch of scout members being rushed in by the other soldiers, some without limbs and some barely alive. They were quickly hurried off to the nearest beds by the nurses who swiftly began to attend to them. I froze at the sight. Everywhere I looked there was too much blood. My hands began to shake, and I felt dizzy. Panic was about to take over my brain when the door opened again to reveal the one face I was dying to see.

Erwin.

I ran towards him and squeezed him into a hug. I pressed my head against his chest, and I could feel myself tearing up. Never had I ever been so relieved to see my brother alive. He was the Commander of Survey Corps and one of the bravest and brightest soldiers to have served Paradis. But, to me, he was still my reckless older brother who always put humanity before himself.

"I am so glad you're okay Erwin...I was so scared.", I said looking up at him. His blond hair was wet and muddled. His blue eyes looked tired but soft as they looked at me.

"I'm okay Y/N, don't worry.", he said with a reassuring smile.

"What happened to your cheek?", I asked worriedly pointing at the scar that I could tell was the work of a blade. No titan could have done that. Was it a fellow soldier? I thought to myself.

"Oh...it's nothing, don't worry about it" was all he said so I decided not to pry. If Erwin thought I didn't need to know then it was probably for the best. "Okay then, I have to get back to work...I'll see you at dinner?"

"Sure...but before you go, do you remember the three cadets I had told you about? The ones who recently joined us from..."

"The underground, yes. What about them?"

"Well, we lost two of them today. The third one, their leader, is...still in shock. He took down the titan that killed his friends single-handedly and might have injured himself in the process. I want you to see if he has a concussion or any major wounds...I'll have Mike bring him in...Honestly, he might not want to continue with us after what happened, but we could really use his skills. He is exceptional.", Erwin finished, lost in thoughts.

"Did he do that to you?", I was now glaring at his cheek.

Erwin must have sensed the anger in my voice, for all he said was "look around, can you blame him?"

I sighed and nodded my head. Compared to what so many soldiers went through, a scar on the cheek was nothing. I suddenly felt ashamed, but Erwin patted my head. "Don't overthink it, kid. I'll see you later. Good luck", and with that, he left.

Erwin was never a man of too many words. But with whatever little he said, he did make a huge impact on everyone. That is why he was respected not only by the scouts but also equally by the civilians. I went back to the bed I was assigned to and waited. Apart from me, there were two other doctors, Anna and Thomas, both one year senior to me. There was also Dr. Hughes, who would only come during expeditions to support and supervise us. All others were nurses, some in training, some experienced.

As my eyes shifted around the room, I saw a familiar face at the door. It was Mike, followed by another man who I had never seen before. Mike was in Erwin's squad and was one of his most trusted soldiers. It was then it hit me who the man behind him was. He was much shorter than Mike, maybe an inch taller than me. He had an undercut and the strands of his raven-colored hair covered his eyes, so I could barely see his face. His head hung low and he was walking rather slowly, taking carefully measured steps. He must have been really close to them.
