maddie watched as grover took off with bessie, waving as they disappeared underwater. percy had sacrificed his coat to their father, in hopes of a safe travel for the satyr and ophiotaurus.

"well, that's one problem addressed," zoe said. "but how can we get to my sisters' garden?"

"how are we doing for cash?" maddie asked. everyone rummaged around in their pockets, occasionally producing a spare coin. their total came to about ten dollars, which wouldn't get them anywhere.

"thalia's right," percy said. "we need a car. but there's nobody to help us here. unless we, uh, borrowed one."

"from who? we don't know anyone in san fransisco."

percy winced. "not what i meant."

"we are not stealing a car."

"wait," thalia said. she started rifling through her backpack. "there is somebody in san francisco who can help us. i've got the address here somewhere."

"who?"

the girl pulled a piece of crumpled up paper out of her backpack and held it up. "professor chase. annabeth's dad."

"i don't know about this," maddie said as they stood outside the door. "i mean, imagine some kids rocking up to your door, saying, 'hi sir, your daughter might potentially be dead! mind if we take your car?"

thalia suddenly looked a little less certain. "uhm . . . i'm sure he'll understand, once we explain our situation."

she ran the doorbell and stepped back. when the door opened, maddie blinked. after hearing annabeth go on about her awful father for two years, she expected a smelly-gabe lookalike. what she didn't expect was a handsome sandy-haired man wearing an aviator cap and goggles.

"hello," he said in a friendly voice. "are you delivering my airplanes?"

the group exchanged wary glances. "uhm, no sir."

"drat," he said. "i need three more sopwith camels."

"right," percy said unsurely. "we're friends of annabeth."

"annabeth?" the man immediately straightened up. "is she alright? has something happened?"

maddie bit her lip. if she had to explain what happened to annabeth one more time she might cry. luckily, dr. chase had seen the look on their faces. he took off his goggles, revealing his deep brown eyes, very different from his daughter's.
