Chapter 46

What if?

What if this day was only just a dream? What if I need to stop trying to convince myself that? What if this will never stop? The sadness, the anger.... What if some things are just going to go around and around? What if today is just proving that nobody can ever win in this life?

What if? What if? What if...

"Where you going?"

I ask Peeta as he slips on his coat. He replies

"I've got work today. The bakery has been quite busy so I can't be late"

Before I can even reply Sophie screams from her highchair

"I wanna come with you!"

Peeta has now learned to understand her poor pronunciation. He smiles and rubs her hair, telling her

"I just have to go to work sweetie, you stay here with Katniss okay?"

I grin and interrupt in a babyish tone

"What if Katniss wants to come also? To help out at the bakery?"

He smiles and says

"Okay, then lets all go"

Sophie squeals with excitement as I slip on her jacket. I lift her into my arms as Peeta plants a kiss on my cheek. I can't help but blush, my eyes falling to the floor as we walk out the front door. As we walk to the bakery, one hand in his and the other holding Sophie's, Peeta says

"You didn't have to come"

I reply

"I know, but I want to help. I like to take the opportunity to get out of the house these days. And besides your busy at the bakery and I want to help"

He smiles, giving my hand a quick squeeze. A few minutes later we arrive at the bakery, entering to be greeted by Gracie. She smiles and says

"Looks like you brought another set of hands today"

Peeta looks at me and smiles before looking back at Gracie and saying

"Two sets of hands actually"

Gracie looks confused for a moment until she sees Sophie behind me. Gracie gives her a small wave which Sophie returns and then standing straight again says

"Let's head back to the kitchen then"

We all head back into the kitchen. We all take an apron off the hanger, Peeta helps Sophie with hers as he has to fold it up so she doesn't trip. After that Gracie offers to mind her for a while, insisting that she is done making pastries that will last the whole day. So despite the uneasiness I have about it I hand over Sophie into Gracie's arms. Peeta then turns to me and asks

"So what do you want to do?"

Good question. What do I want to do? I tell him

"I'll find something that needs doing"

He nods and then walks over to a table across the room and starts pulling ingredients from the cupboard. I decide to head further back into the kitchen, finding Jason, Mia, Rachel and Lynn. They are all working so for a moment they don't notice me until Jason turns and catches me out of the corner of his eye. He smiles and says

"Hey! First time I've seen you in the bakery uniform"

He gestures toward my apron. I shrug my shoulders whilst grinning

"I decided its time I help out here a little bit, I heard your very busy these days"

Rachel turns around from the computer and says reading off a page in a folder
