What if?

What if next year will bring even more happiness? What if with a new year comes new possibilities, new adventures, new stories to tell? What if the new year is a new beginning, a new start, a clean plate? What if this year will bring more amazing moments for us all?

What if? What if? What if...

---

We all sit out on the huge porch on the loungers as we await midnight. In the valley of the mountains is a small village in which we got off the train in and they apparently let off fireworks at midnight every new year so everyone is here once again to watch. We all are wearing heavy clothing as the breeze is quite cold, sharply biting at the bare skin of our faces turning everyone's cheeks bright red. I have a big woolly coat wrapped around me as we all chat outside, hands wrapped tightly around mugs of hot coco as our fingers are desperate for heat.

I take a glance down at my phone to find its only 11:00. Sophie and Finn are inside playing as they got bored and cold not so long ago and as they aren't as tolerant of the cold as we are they headed inside to play with their toys. At one point I am leaning over the railing, looking at the light coming for amongst the mountains where the town lies. I hear the cheering of crowds that are probably roaming through the streets, I hear music blaring in celebration as everyone counts down to the years end. The snow has been light for the last few days but at this very moment the air is clear, the night sky filled with stars and darkness rather than just clouds waiting to sprinkle snow upon the landscape. However though the snow has not fallen since the temperature has not yet risen the snow on the mountain peaks remains. The stars are beautiful tonight, lighting up the night sky. I hear footsteps approach me and soon Peeta is at my side. He says to me

"This reminds me of the balcony in the tribute centre"

I nod slightly and say

"In some ways I can agree. But here the landscape is nicer. Trees and mountains instead of skyscrapers and buildings. And here you can see stars rather than city lights. They cheering of happiness here, not for death...."

He nods in agreement. For a while there is just silence between us as we hear the laughing and chatting of everyone else just a few feet behind us. I then feel that sudden touch of electricity begin at my fingertips and rush up the veins in my arms as he slips his hand into mine. His is firm compared to mine which trembles of cold. His touch gives me warmth, not exactly pure heat that would warm me from the cold, a different warmth. A warmth at the heart. After a while we return to the loungers, sitting side by side with our hands still linked between us. We chat with everyone much longer as we all sip on a capitol wine, all except for Effie and Haymitch. I assume its for Haymitch's sake as he has been doing very well to stay away from alcohol only for occasions for the last few years and I suppose Effie is staying away from it also to support him. After a while I go over to Annie and talk to her. I ask her

"How's it in district 4?"

She replies

"It's good. I am working now, I sort out the business work for a fisher's restaurant down the road from me. It's perfect because it allows me to work but also mind Finn"
