serendipity

it feels good:
the whole idea of this trip
the person beside me
it feels really good

when i left home two weeks ago
i expected change
and adventures
and freedom

but this
this is way better than what i had in mind

sure i thought that travelling on my own
wouldn't be as fun as travelling with someone else
and jeongguk proved it right

the two weeks since i ran away
has been the best two weeks of
my entire life
all thanks to a single person
who just had to come along like
a fortunate stroke of serendipity

we entered caves, stalked the woods
watched the fireflies at night
swam in that freezing cold pond again
even got chased by a wild boar
in which i embarrassingly tripped
over a tiny piece of branch
while trying to save my own life
and ended up with a blue knee
that got treated a bit too harshly by jeongguk
considering he wasn't very
experienced in first aid

the boy has a lot to learn

i'm sitting by the pond's edge
with my legs dangling over
and dipped in the water

i stare over at the polaroids in my hand
unaware of the smile on my face
as i recall everything we've done
in the past week of camping
in the woods

jeongguk comes up from behind me
carrying our bags on his shoulder

i retrieve my own
and we walk back to find our rover

it remains in the same place as before
and we toss our bags into the backseat
before jeongguk starts the engine and drives

the familiar park ranger meets us
just before we drive out into the highway
he waves a hand with a smile on his face
and jeongguk returns the gesture

"i'm exhausted" jeongguk huffs

"i can take the wheel if you want" i say
but his forehead creases

"no you're gonna get us into an accident"

"says the one without a driver's licence"
i retort
and i see his lips curving into a frown

"not like you have one either"
he shoots back after awhile
and i have to resist the urge
to pinch him on his cheeks when he puffs them out

after a few minutes on the road
i reach into my bag to take out a chocolate bar
he tosses me a quick glance
eyeing the food, and i get his signal

i break off a tiny piece
and hold it up towards his mouth

he looks at the road and then back at me
before glancing at the piece of
chocolate in my hand
"say ahhh"

he rolls his eyes and with his
gaze back on the road
takes the piece of chocolate into his
mouth, his lips slightly grazing my finger

i pull back immediately and lower my head
suddenly flustered

"another one" he says after awhile
and i catch his
ridiculously beautiful smile
before breaking off another piece
and putting it into his mouth

he bites down a little too hard this time
and i flinch at the pain

"y-yah!"

"sorry" he says with an innocent chuckle
"did that hurt"

"of course it did!"
i rub the hurt finger with my other hand
and he glances at me apologetically
he almost looks like a dejected puppy

"it's fine
i was kidding it doesn't hurt that bad"

i let out a sigh of relief when he smiles again
and then he does something
that sends me heart into a somersault

he leaves one hand on the wheel
and takes my
throbbing finger with the other
before planting a soft peck
on the spot he bit

i stare at him in awe
and he puts his hands back on the wheel
pretending as if
he didn't just do what he just did
"i hope it feels better now"
