I woke up to the sound of a gentle knock
on my door. Rubbing my eyes and yawning, I stumbled towards the door to see my mother standing there with a worried expression on her face.

"Oh Ehmel, you were still sleeping. Do you know what time it is?" she scolded me in her usual motherly tone.

"I know, Ammi. I slept late last night, that's why," I replied, feeling guilty for making her worry.

"Okay, okay. Today is Mehndi, did you take out the clothes you will wear tonight?" my mother asked, changing her tone to a more concerned one.

"No, Ammi. I completely forgot that today is Mehndi," I said, feeling embarrassed for not remembering such an important event.

"What, Ehmel? Where is your mind? You can't do anything," my mother said, shaking her head in disappointment.

I couldn't help but smile at her. "When I have such a beautiful mother, I don't have to worry about anything." I said, feeling grateful for her unconditional love and support.

My mother's face softened and she wrapped her arms around me in a warm hug. Just then, Mrs. Tazmeer came in.

"Narmeen, you're here. I need your help," she said, addressing my mother.

Looking at Mrs. Tazmeer, I remembered that she was not Raha's real mother. But seeing how she was taking care of everything for Raha's wedding, I realized that some bonds are stronger than blood.

"Ehmel dear, after taking a bath, go and have your breakfast. Okay?" Mrs. Tazmeer said, smiling at me.

I nodded with a warm smile, feeling grateful for her kind words. "Okay, Ehmel, I am going with Fariyal. You can join us later," my mother said, and they both left.

I couldn't help but feel grateful for the love and support of these amazing women in my life. I quickly got ready and headed downstairs for breakfast. As I sat down to eat, my mind wandered back to the conversation I had with Salar the night before.

But for now, I was just happy to be surrounded by the warmth and love of my family. As we all got ready for the mehndi, I couldn't help but feel excited for what the night would bring. Little did I know, it would be one of the most memorable nights of my life.

The morning after breakfast was filled with excitement and anticipation. The guests were buzzing with energy, discussing the upcoming events and preparations. However, amidst all the hustle and bustle, the topic of mehndi preparation seemed to be the centre of attention.

Mrs Tazmeer, called out to me, "Ehmel, dear, can you go downstairs and bring the henna supplies from Raha's room?" I happily obliged, eager to lend a helping hand in any way I could. "Yeah sure, aunty," I said with a smile.

But before I could leave, Mrs Tazmeer added, "Okay dear, go with Hala, she will help you with that." We quickly made our way to Raha's room, excited to begin the mehndi preparations.

As we were walking towards the elevator, Salar, "Hey hey stop," he said while coming inside with his usual attitude. Hala and I exchanged glances, wondering what Salar had in mind.

Salar then turned to me and said, "Ehmel, let me join you guys. I want to see how the mehndi preparations are going." I was surprised but happy that Salar, who was usually busy with his own work, wanted to be a part of the preparations. We nodded in agreement and made our way to Mrs. Tazmeer's room.

Hala and I nodded and the lift started moving again. But suddenly, it stopped in the middle of nowhere I felt my heart racing as the lights in the lift flickered and then went off completely. I could feel my breath getting shallow and my palms getting sweaty. I tried to calm myself down, but the fear was overpowering me.

"Salar, what happened?" I managed to say, my voice trembling.

"I think it's a power cut, that's why the lift stopped," he replied calmly, but I could hear the concern in his voice.

But I couldn't stop myself from panicking. I could feel the walls closing in on me, suffocating me. I clutched onto Salar's hand, seeking some sort of comfort.

"I can't breathe, Salar," I said, my voice trembling.

"Ehmel, calm down. I'm here with you," he said, taking my hand in his and trying to soothe me.

But then Hala's voice broke through, taunting and unsympathetic. "What's the big deal, Ehmel? It's just a little power cut."

I couldn't believe Hala's insensitivity. Didn't she understand my fear? But Salar came to my defense, his voice firm and concerned.

"Shut up, Hala. Look at Ehmel. She's clearly struggling," Salar said, his hand firmly on mine.

"I have a phobia of suffocated places, I can't handle this," I said, feeling tears welling up in my eyes.

Salar immediately pulled me into a hug, his arms enveloping me and calming me down. "Ehmel, calm down. Breathe with me, okay? I'm here, don't worry. Everything will be fine," he whispered, kissing the top of my head.

His words and his embrace slowly helped me to calm down. I focused on my breathing, matching it with his, and gradually my heart rate slowed down. I felt safe and protected in his arms, and I knew that as long as he was there, I could handle anything.

After a few minutes, the lights came back on and the lift started moving again. As we reached the ground floor, I stepped out of the lift, still shaking. Salar wrapped his arm around me, guiding me towards Raha's aunt's room where the henna supplies were kept.

"Are you okay, Ehmel?" Salar asked, concern evident in his voice.

I nodded, still trying to calm my racing heart. "Thank you, Salar. I couldn't have made it without you," I said, tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes.

"Always, Ehmel. I'll always be here for you," Salar replied, giving me a reassuring smile.

As we entered the room, I saw Mrs. Natasha and Raha's aunt waiting for us. They were surprised to see us looking disheveled and shaken.

"What happened, Guys?" Natasha asked, her eyes filled with concern.

"There was a power cut in the lift, and Ehmel got scared," Salar explained, his arm still around me.

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry. I had no idea about your fear, Ehmel," Raha's aunt said, feeling guilty.

"It's alright, aunty. I'm fine now, thanks to Salar," I said, giving Salar a grateful smile.

Natasha and Raha's aunt quickly got the henna supplies ready, and we started our preparations for the mehndi ceremony.
