'Easy come, easy go

LAUREN

"How complicated can your life be?" Nelly asked with disdain shutting the door to her apartment. I followed suit comforting myself in silence. Not like anything I said now would appease her.

"I was drunk, okay. I didn't know what I was doing at the time" I manage to say plopping myself on the available couch I could see.

Nelly whirls around, "And who's fault is that? Hmm?"

"No one" I answered dryly checking the pocket of the dress I wore for my phone. Where did I leave it? It can't be in that guy's apartment. Could it?

I creased my face in despair. Why is today so messed up for me?

Nelly picked up from where she'd stopped, "I am only letting you in because you look like shit not because of blood ties or anything, got that?" She eyed my disheveled hair, and the rumple dress on me while she stripped off the strap on her hand, and kick off her sneakers as well.

From her outfit, it was obvious she was returning from her morning jogging.

When I didn't say anything, she sigh and added, "The guest room is down the hallway; the second room by your right. You should know that I assume"

"Yea, thanks," I said and gathered my body up from the couch. I miss spending time with her and her playing the big sister. I knew our relationship was beyond saving at this point and I can't blame her if she hates me.

"Nelly" I called when I reach the entrance to the hallway.

"Go take a shower first, please. Don't make me change my mind" She waved me off going in the opposite direction.

I exhaled and walk away.

NICK

"Welcome home!" My mother exclaimed excitingly as she flew the door open for me. I send her a heartwarming smile. Jackie was meant to come along with us to the family house to spend a few days with us but she'd insisted on returning to her fiancee's apartment due to my father's hostile behavior towards Paul. I have no idea what he has against the young man. It reminded me of the day I introduced Lauren to the family; my father immediately objected

I wished I had listened to him and his warnings.

"Are you okay, son?" My mother asked pulling me out of my thought.

"Yes. Thanks, mom. Isn't this too much?" I gave the decorated house that had welcome home cardboards and balloons hanging on each side of the living room a second look and then divert it to my mother's face inquisitively.

It wasn't necessary to go all out but my mom always overdo things sometimes.

"Nothing is too much for my son" She complained taking the few bags from Melissa and handing them to the house help that later joined us in the living room.

Josiah on the other hand struggles with Melissa's holds to be set free. I was on crutches so I couldn't carry him around. I nodded for Melissa to let him be. He speeds away immediately Melissa let him go.

Melissa went to go after him to keep an eye on him but my mother stop her.

"Leave the boy to enjoy himself in his grandparent's home," She said ushering me to a seat, "How are you feeling, son?"
