The snap of the briefcase latch reverberates in the silence of my bedroom. Even the clock knows better than to tick in Sleep's presence; it seems I alone dare to antagonize him.
"I don't have all night," I say.
His chuckles are as luxuriant as his blinks. "As per the contract," he pulls out a piece of paper, "you owe me one Night."
When he releases the paper into the air, it flutters to my hand, where it wraps around my right wrist and tightens into a handcuff.
"Yeah, I know. We've been through this before."
"My dear owl, how I do love our time together," he says.
