The homeless lady, a frequent visitor to my place of work, paces across the street from where I'm currently sitting, waiting for the bus. The people at the intersection give her a wide birth.

The light turns green, and she walks onto the street. When she's about midway to the other side, she yells and kicks the air in front of her.

Right then, my phone pings with a notification: the network is unstable; try again later.

I look back at the woman.

She used to be a lawyer.

She's still standing in the middle of the road.
