The moon reaches its zenith in the star-filled sky, its steady glow leading us deeper into the forest. We have never ventured this far out, but the signs all point to the location through the dark line of trees.
"Maybe I should take point," Tarantula says. His tone is tentative; he's testing my resolve.
My hand already at the hilt of the knife holstered on my belt, I keep my eyes straight ahead. "No."
The air is calm and still.
Then, a rustling of the tall weeds to our right.
A black blur leaps onto our path.
