Chapter Fifty-Six

The kiss, if I could call it that, lasted less than a second and within that second Alpha Alessandro had launched himself across the room and yanked me away from the guard.

His hands twirled into my hair as lifted my face up so I could meet his eyes.

The eyes that were filled with betrayal and anger.

Swallowing harshly at the intense look he was giving me, I tried to think of what to say and do next. For some reason I couldn't think of what I was supposed to do now that I had completed the first part of my ridiculous plan. What should I say now?

The guard had the same idea as he started to splutter around and explain to the Alpha what happened.

"Silence." Alpha Alessandro snapped causing the man to obey immediately. "I will deal with you later."

I turned my head back a fraction to see the guard leaving only for Alpha Alessandro to move it back. "Don't look at him." He snapped, his voice filled with anger.

I had to explain to the Alpha that this guard had nothing to do with any of this and this was all on me. "It wasn't his fault."

He narrowed his now completely dark eyes. "I know. If it was, he wouldn't be breathing now."

Shit! Rachel was right?

I'm Alpha Alessandro's mate?

No, I couldn't be.

He probably didn't want anyone touching his prisoner, he was just possessive that's all.

"Why?" I needed confirmation from him, I had to know for sure. "Why would you have hurt him if he had kissed me?"

His hands untangled from my hair and he took a step back. His eyes were returning to its original colour and he seemed unsure of what to say now. "No one will touch what is mine."

Mine?

"Your what?" I pushed, not bothering about the consequences. "What am I to you?"

He gave me no response as he stared me down. Did he know I know?

"Tell me." This time it was me who was taking steps to close the distance. "Tell me what I am to you."

His face and body language suggested he would not reveal this information so quickly and easily and I would have to yank this information out from him. I could be totally wrong but I wouldn't know for sure unless I asked.

Taking in a deep breath, I asked him the question that could potentially change my life forever. "Am I your mate?"

Alpha Alessandro froze, he didn't move an inch, his eyes didn't blink and it didn't look like he was breathing either. He was like this for a couple of minutes though it felt like a lifetime.

Would he tell me the truth? Would he lie? What would he say?

"Alpha Alessandro?" My voice was soft and almost like a whisper.

He remained frozen as if he didn't hear me call him. Perhaps he didn't, so I tried again but this time louder. "Alpha Alessandro?"

Again, there was no response. I waited another minute, counting each second slowly as I allowed him time to process the question I had asked him. He was as still as a statue, the expressions on his face was as if it had been etched into marble, unmoving and frozen in time.

His lack of response, or should I say, lack of movement was starting to grate on my patience. Was I being naïve or stupid in thinking his reaction could be from the absurdity of the question I had posed?
