Newark Castle was built in 1475 by George Maxwell. In the late 16th century Newark Castle was inherited by Sir Patrick Maxwell who beaten and imprisoned his wife Lady Margaret who he had sixteen children with. It's believed he murdered two people which some reports say they were neighbour's, however there seems to be different theories on who they were. The last Maxwell family member to own the castle died in 1694 , since then the castle has had several owners.
Newark Castle is reported to be haunted by a woman who has been seen looking out of a window , who it's believed to be Lady Margaret.
