“When I was a student, I got called in on a stroke patient. She had coded and they were doing CPR. They worked for 45 minutes, but she died. They cleaned her up, and called on the family to say goodbye, but by that time the family left. She had been both brain dead and without a pulse for more than 45 minutes. Blood had filled her brain, and she was completely grey and started to smell. Suddenly, she sat up, and called for her family. The nurses rushed to get monitors and equipment back on her. They started working on her again, she stabilized, said goodbye to her family, and promptly died a second time.

I have one more nurses story and then I'm gonna move on.  I can't find my paper on it and I'm disappointed. I'd like to keep it in their own words as much as possible. So this is my final nurses story told by me as I remember hearing it......

This nurse was in the ER and some gang members were brought in. This one  young black guy, say in his early twenties or so was one and he was in bad shape. His family was called.

The nurses heart broke seeing his sweet mother so distraught at finally seeing her son after such a long time and  he being in such a bad way and obviously not going to make it further than that night in the ER. The mother was talking softly to her son, telling him that he was going to have to acknowledge Jesus and ask for forgiveness. He kept telling her to shut the * up. Finally in anger he turned to her and said F*** YOU AND F*** YOUR GOD.

Everyone was standing there  in shock over the vileness spilling out from him. Suddenly the whole atmosphere of the ER changed. It got heavy and extremely cold. She said the whole place became like the inside of a commercial deep freeze. And all the noise became muffled and distorted. The dying man looked over to the opening in the curtain and said Oh Hell No. NO, NO, No F***ing Way. No No. He got more and more agitated and started screaming and begging for help and screaming and flailing his arms and kicking.  Then with a shudder he was gone. The coldness dissipated rather quickly and the sounds of the ER came  back to normal. The thing is everyone in that ER heard it and felt it and there was silence as everyone absorbed what had happened.

At the beginning of her next shift she was told that these things happen and she was not to talk or dwell on it.The Last Goodbye
